Arizona Chickens

FYI - the guy in Willcox that I got my Naked Neck hens and Bresse hatching eggs from is attempting to liquidate some of his flock. I got a call yesterday that he's selling all his breeders of his Bresse, Russian Orloff, some buff NN's, some Bantams of some sort (I dunno, my mind blocked it out because i have no use for bantams) and some other stuff for rock bottom prices. I would be interested in the Orloff's but I really have no idea how to make room for them. If anyone is interested they can pm me and I'll give them his phone number.

What an exciting time for you!
Totally!!

As of now I've got 8 single gene Nn's, two fully feathered, one that's halfway around cutting out of the shell, and a few more that haven't pipped yet and need to get their butts in gear. The majority are black with some sort of pattern on their face telling me they aren't going to be pure black.

I'm kinda wondering what this one is going to turn out to be. Looks like some kind of silver or lavender something....

That last one might even be some sort of splash. It might be interesting for you to grow that one out.

ZOMBIE CHICKEN

Anyone run across a hen that is fine in the morning and then after being in the nest box, yet not lay an egg she acts like she's in a stupor just out of it won't eat treats, drinks water though stands around and the best I can say it's like she a zombie, later she gets better but until then she stops laying but she doesn't stay in the box so I don't think it's broodiness... any ideas? Thanks

I don't have much experience yet with broodies, but (I think that @DesertChic or @Diannastarr might be able to help answer your question.

EGG BOUND?

@meetthebubus It sounds like she got too hot. Did you dunk her in cool/cold water by chance. They do suffer in the nest boxes because they want private rooms but sometimes I notice they come out really, really hot. I have a pan of water right near my nest boxes and they generally step right into the pan of water and begin drinking.

EGG BOUND?

I agree. It sounds like she could be egg bound. Occasionally one of my girls will act like this is she's got a particularly large egg to lay. All but one of my girls was able to eventually lay the egg and return to normal. Keep a close eye on her. If she does this for more than a day you may have to intervene.

I keep a water bowl close to my nesting box too even when they are not broody. Sometimes it seem's that some hens take longer than others to lay an egg.
