Arizona Chickens

I'll have to agree with everything MagicChicken says here.
Birds generally stress more easily and trying to push him use is legs isn't helping at all. A vet that treats things like pheasants and grouse, ie.. a wildlife rehabber, might be a better choice. If he was grabbed by the back there could very well be some spinal damage the vet didn't catch. There could also be other septic infections from the cat saliva.

Would anyone here be interested in the breeding and continuation of the breeders Hupp line Australorp's? Dianna in Bisbee wanted to buy my 3 Hupp hens, but she is unable to come get them, and has other expenses that she has to take care of. I am keeping the chicks from my last hatching to grow out. I hate to see the Hupp line of these die out, and would like to keep them here in AZ. Would you or anyone that you know of be interested in breeding them? I have 3 Hupp line hens (2 blue and 1 black), and I could throw in my Blue rooster that is a 1/2 Hupp line and 1/2 Rattlesnake Ridge line for $100.00 for the set of 4. All chicks hatched from this set would produce 3/4 Hupp line and 1/4 Rattlesnake Ridge line. If you are interested, then send me a PM here in BYC.

I am planning to go with the Rattlesnake Ridge line over here, and will be ordering more hatching eggs from Kurt. Doing it this way would keep the 2 good bloodlines of these going.

@Eighty806 I'm so sorry for your loss AND for all the extra work it will now take to keep them safe from those bobcats. I too agree with Magic Chicken. Where is your hospital room/cage? Maybe putting it where he can see the rest of the flock would work. I've put a severe bumblefooted fixed girl in the cage in the yard. There was no infection problems. It kept her in the "loop" so to say and she was not depressed with spending a day or so in the hospital cage. Hardest part is keeping them cool enough in the heat. I use ice in a low plant plate. Maybe even start tapering off the meds a bit. Those chickens are really tough and get better pretty quick by themselves. Hang in there.

@Eighty806 we had a bobcat experience they will jump 3 times as much as your block fence.
I was just going to upload my story about my hen that out ran a bobcat tonight but after that experience we did a 360 enclosure for them here is the video if you want to see it... it's not fancy but it keeps out most predators and gives me peace of mind

Well Sept 13th marked 1 year since my girls started laying and now that they're older and no longer hot at night they fight horribly at night when trying to find a spot to roost they nolonger want to huddle close lol

So it's been a huge drama my roo is great but not perfect his fault is he wants one 8 ft roost pole all to himself leaving only one for 7 girls so we opened up the adjacent egg house with another pole and now the drama is much less but they can see each other so they still feel safe and no more screaming matches at dusk lol

What brand is everyone feeding their layers right now? Mine have stopped eating the dumor and I know they don't like cal ranch brand or Walmart brand so I'm looking once again...

The thing is when the wild critters stop coming to steal the feed as well, I know for sure there is something wrong with the feed now... lol

I feed Feather Fixer. It seems to help keep the mites and lice under control. I still have to deal with bugs periodically but not as often as when I was using different feed. The layers get oyster shell as a supplement.

Sometimes it's not the brand of feed that's the problem, but the place where you get it. I learned the hard way to look for feed stores that do a lot of business AND don't keep a lot of inventory on hand. They tend to have fresher feed. There is one feed store I will never return to because I repeatedly got buggy feed from them and they blew me off when I tried to talk to them about it. The last batch of feed I got there was not only buggy it was rancid, like it had gotten wet at some point. Never going back there. I've been really happy since I switched feed stores.

Just take a good look at the feed on hand in the store, and watch how often the feed inventory rotates. If you see bugs all over the bags in the store that is not a good sign. I know you didn't mention bugs, but the feed could still be old.

Good luck.
