Arizona Chickens

Chicken therapy update

Punky is doing better I'm giving defrosted frozen corn which gave her energy, she's finally realizing Roo isn't out to get her, shes starting to walk around with everyone and doesnt start screaming and running as soon as I put her down. Lol right now I only have 2 girls who are not yet molting thus they are the only ones laying eggs and what's "neat" to notice is Roo only mates with the layers so he knows what he's doing ;)

Awww no buff orpingtons in the mix?! :tongue j/k have fun with them, chickens are great for your health, taking care of them I mean :woot
I actually wanted something with a nice lacing on their necks like the Delaware, Buff/Light Brahma, Columbia Wyandotte but they were all sold out.

One of my main concerns is "who's gonna go broody". I don't want to deal with that issue. I've also read that folks prefer to get their chicks in the fall and let them go through that season and winter and gradually adapt to the warming temperatures of Spring and Summer, especially in Arizona.

Although my older hen's were molting, they still laid eggs even though it had slowed down. My younger hen's eggs are now gradually getting bigger, so they should be a good enough size for hatching, come spring. I also have some 6 1/2 week old chicks that I have been growing out from my last hatching, and more eggs in the incubator that are due to hatch next Wednesday.

Not only that, but by getting the chicks in the fall, most breeds will start laying eggs by the spring.

I actually got a notification from the support section here about the "FLOCK FRESH BEDDING" from the Standlee Hay Company. It's some type of chopped hay, alfalfa and Zeolite granules and is ideal for composting. It is available at OK Feed and Supply up on Ft. Lowell and Dodge in Tucson.

On another note....I finally took the plunge and ordered my chicks today

3 Austra Whites
3 Australorps
3 Barred Plymouth Rocks
3 Rhode Island Reds (Sex-links were sold out)
1 Sweeter Heater

I've been laying on this couch watching TV and cruising here since I retired in March...everything neglected, the house is a mess, and it's time to get busy and get things done.

I'm just plain tired, no motivation and not enjoying this well deserved time off, just feeling awkward and just wanna crawl under a rock. I just feel worthless.

These new babies should give me a jump start for all the other projects that need to be done, and maybe giving me some purpose. The order is sealed, so I need to get my brooder built for the babies who will be shipped next week. The plans are already drawn up for that, with two pieces of plywood and some poultry netting.

WOOT! Way to go, Bobby! This is big progress. Keep us posted.

Thanks, BlueBaby. I'm in no hurry for eggs right now. Let me enjoy being a worry wart, new parent (LOL) and let them go through the four seasons and adapt into the spring and summer.

Yes, you will probably be a worry wort for awhile as the chicks grow and you will be hoping that they didn't make a mistake and send you a couple of boys.

I think someone is addicted. Weren't you going to be done hatching for a while at least 2 hatches ago? :lau Do you need an intervention?

@Bobby Basham we all become familiar with each other and we vent. It's all good. And your dirty laundry, it isn't so dirty ;) Being lazy and doing nothing is perfectly ok as long as you don't get in a rut and let yourself get too down. Now that your babies are on their way you have things to do, and they'll keep you busy. Plus getting them now will give you nice weather to get outside and spend time with them. My whole attitude has changed in the last 9 months. My birds and their antics make me laugh every day. I hope you enjoy having chickens. I'm looking forward to reading about your experience!
