I would rather pay more and buy quality the first time around. That more than compensates for buying cheap mess time after time, replacement after replacement, when you could have done it right the first time. Do the homework and see what tools and gadgets get the highest ratings.

I don't know how I got through this, using a jig saw and circular saw, but I won't ever cut another 4x4 piece of lumber again. Those saws barely handled it and was a true pain. That's all I had to work with at the time, but got through it.

I tend to over compensate and had some extra money, so invested in this for my future projects. This should work.

There are poultry shows in Arizona. We have a large one here in Tucson every November. There is one coming up in Safford in January.

Oh crap, I've been retired for 10 months and didn't realize poultry shows have been going on. My days are free and it would be worth the drive going there. Please keep us posted on the exact dates.

I'm not interested in buying because I already have 12 spoiled brats over 5 weeks old still in the bathroom to be moved out soon. The experience of going to an actual poultry should be an experience in itself, just to see what is actually out there. It would be a first for me, for sure.

Bobby, the shade structure is approx 19’x8. The unshaded part is that area as well. I ended up with that size because I had two long beams that I needed to use. They were left overs from building our house (framers mid cut them). I also don’t like cutting metal sheets, so I just bought 10’ lengths and used them, so the beams are 10’ apart.

I’m also on a little over an acre, so I wanted to give them some room and use up a bit of my yard. I also didn’t want something that I had to crouch down in to take/clean.

So I didn’t intend to go huge, but it ended up that way out of convenience. We have 9 at the moment and I’d like to get a few barred rocks to round it out to an even dozen.

My daughter wants to get a rooster sometime and let one of the birds hatch some chicks. If that no crow collar lowers the volume I may be on board with her in a year or so.

It's always better to go bigger. You never know when chicken math will strike and you end up with more birds than you had originally intended on keeping.

I have that saw. It was a Xmas gift a few years back from my husband and son. Please believe me when I saw it's worth every penny. I've worked mine very hard and it's never let me down.

You will be blown away by the birds you see at the show. Some of the birds are HUGE!!! I met a woman there who breeds MASSIVE Cochins and is so charmed by how friendly her birds are that she took one of her roosters out of the cage and said, "Here, hold him," while thrusting the beautiful, fluffy bird into my arms. I was stunned, but incredibly pleased and grateful. I think the Polish and Silkies are probably best represented there, but you'll see a lot of breeds you might not otherwise even be aware of, and not just chickens....turkeys, ducks, geese, pigeons, rabbits....I spend about two hours there every time I go.

So far, my structure is only five feet tall since I live in an HOA and didn't want to offend any neighbors or HOA police patrolling throughout the neighborhood.

I'm 5'8" on a good day (LOL), but didn't want to build anything to cause any issues, so I kept everything low. I'm not happy about it, but I do live in a concrete neighborhood and have to abide by their silly bylaws.

As far as I can tell, I'm the only one raising chickens here, and a few of my neighbors have no problem with it and are waiting for some eggs.

This is just something to do for sheer enjoyment since I've retired. It's hard to believe that an old passion of over 40 years ago resurfaced and still going through the shock of actually being retired. I'm not accepting retirement gracefully, but thankfully accepted the fact that I don't have to clock in every day.
