Arizona Chickens

My EE Tris. She's the smallest and youngest of the hens, but no longer bottom of the pecking order. She was rather pleased with herself defying my orders to get off the fence.

Two questions for anyone who wants to answer

1. What would you say is the best thing or one of the best things about having a pet chicken?

2. What's one of your favorite things your pet chicken does with you, etc.?

1. Before I started keeping chickens I would've said, "The eggs, of course", but now that I've been at it a few years I'd have to say that the best thing overall is everything they've taught me and continue to teach me. It's too easy to think "they're just chickens", but once you spend time watching them and interacting with them you learn that there's so much more to them than most people realize.

2. My favorite thing? Snuggles...definitely snuggles. I have birds, both roosters and hens, that will actually eschew treats just to snuggle on my lap with me. Animals are capable of giving us a kind of love that people are often too busy or distracted to give one another.

I love this quote, its perfect just what I think, like I've read on here before from others, sometimes people don't get the love of chickens until you experience them, spend time with them! thanks! :goodpost:

So I googled Mohawkie, and found her pic... clicked on it, and it took me to your youtube video...

Aw Mohawkie has gone viral! She shall live forever on the internet :)
Ironically a few days after I inquired about hens who sit all day in the nest box, my BO Waffles went FULL ON BROODY. She won't eat, won't drink, refuses to go in the run or roost, and stopped laying. She took over the entire nest box, sitting on her clutch of golf balls and other hen's eggs. She is puffed up, pissed off, and in a trance. The other hens have refused to lay in the box because she took over, and they began laying up in the roost on the poop board, which is problematic for so many reasons. So, Waffles is in jail now. (Giant dog crate). I removed all bedding and just put some food and water in there for her. She hates me! I check on her every hour or so, and sometimes I let her out & she will go out into the run and act like a regular chicken, but then she will growl and go up the ladder to the nest box, so I send her back to chicken jail. I hope she breaks this habit soon. I want my sweet Waffles back. Any other tips on how to break a broody gal?

You don't wanna let her raise some babies? I have a young Dark Cornish that looks like she's decided to go broody. She's only sitting on like 6-7 eggs and some of them are from hens I kinda want to hatch from anyway... so I'm letting her sit. :)
