Question:
Do you think having a rooster speeds up the process for a pullet to start laying sooner than if she was rooming with just girls?

The one in East Mesa stocks it but they don't stock the other Nutrena label (Country Feeds, which has an awesome 21% egg producer feed. I use that in winter). They also stock Standlee straw, alfalfa, and timothy compressed bales, and my rabbit feed. Super helpful to get all of it in one stop. :)
Nutrena country feeds is what I use, the hens really like it.

I have a theory, I could be wrong, but I think a roosters mating might mature hens faster, trigger hormones maybe? It's still a hypothesis but I'll see with these ee pullets if that's true :)
Do the scientific method. Have 1/2 of the hens with a rooster and the other half with no contact or vision of rooster. When your EE start to lay, keep logs as to which group laid how many. If your rooster group for instance laid an egg first, it may be coincidental. If your non rooster group laid first, that also is inconclusive. After lets say 3 weeks, when laying of eggs occurs, then compare your logged results.
Do not think of comparing your other hens first egg timing to these, since they are different breeds. That is like comparing apples to oranges.
The timing of first egg laying also has other factors in play. The time of year chic is hatched and the following weather influence on chickens growth/development. In your test, both groups would have same hatch date.
There is nothing wrong with you having a THEORY, and a HYPOTHESIS. :thumbsup,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, That is how answers are obtained.
Consider doing it if even only for your self enrichment. Not sure how EZ to separate the groups for you would be. :idunno

Nice idea but besides hard to separate they would miss each other they would of had to be separate from the beginning

It's more of a casual observation like the girls marshmallows been mating with have had a sudden increase in comb growth and redness, could be coincidental,
One thing is if the ee isn't ready until 6 or 7 months why is the roo mating, at 3 1/2 months

My theory is the buff is said to start approximately 6 months to lay but mine started at 4 1/2 months

So if the ee is said to start at around 7 month yet the mating and some redder combs are starting perhaps it triggers egg production early

So basically the answer to my theory would be when they start lay vs when they are said to start if there is a significant time difference of 2 months or will they start lay at around 6 to 7 months as stated in general

So either they will start in a month or have to endure 3 months of mating for no reason
Or marshmellow doesn't mellow and becomes too mean and ends up bunking with China

@meetthebubus in case you need data for your experiment:

My first flock grew up together, one boy and five girls. They didn't lay until they were 24 to 26 weeks...

The additions were added and also had a roo most of the time, until just before they began laying, which was at roughly the same age of 24 to 26 weeks.

I'm curious about your results!

Btw, have you posted your integration video yet?

@igorsMistress Thanks, and I filmed it and edited it but the upload where I live is so slow that I have to upload it at night and I keep forgetting since I've been down with a cold to do so, sorry it took so long
Im hoping to have it up tomorow morning

The 2 main things since the integration day
I can say the one thing I'm pleased most about since the integration is that Mr Roo Bubu has been a gentleman roo and has left all the ee's alone including Marshmellow

One thing I dislike but will get better is treat time isn't as fun more stressful

I've recently been able to let my silky terrier out in the yard with the chickens. Amazingly she leaves them alone and does her thing. I decided to try it with the puppy. He hasn't been aggressive but today he was a little bouncy and the chief was ready with wings and feet :gigno one was hurt, Frankie is still young enough to be afraid. I'm hoping they'll get along though so am acclimating them now. He was most interested in checking out the yard, just curious if they'd play with him.

Oh yuck, I'm sorry you've been under the weather! Hope you feel better soon. No rush either, I was just watching for it so I can see your experience, I don't want to miss it :). I'm happy to know Mr. Roo is a true gentleman too. I'm sure it helps quite a bit.

I had similar treat time stress. Give it time, the flocks will adjust and everyone will figure out the pecking order. I tend to spread treats far and wide so everyone has a chance to have some.
