Arizona Chickens

Anyone here have any experience with bumblefoot? I was out in the coop yesterday evening and was looking over my brown leghorn. When I looked at the bottom of her foot, I saw a tiny callus that was light brown. I then checked the rest of them, and they all have it, on both feet. Some have more of a black spot, they look kind of like a scab. I am sure it is the early stages of bumblefoot, and I'm devastated. As you all know, I'm quite obsessed with my girls and of course want them to live a healthy life, and I feel like I've somehow failed them. There is nothing sharp in the coop to cut them, but I definitely need to find the source of this. The good news is they are not too bothered by the condition yet, as it has not progressed to a later stage that would require surgery or cause them immense pain. They are all scratching, standing, running and roosting like normal, with no swelling. I have been looking at non-surgical options and feel like I caught it early enough, but I'm still so upset. I have twenty little chicken feet to treat! Suggestions from anyone here would be greatly appreciated. Also, just a public service announcement from my coop to yours: check your chickens feet, and check them often.

So I checked 27 chickens feet tonight, turns out China has one on her right foot, its the same one that lost the spur in the dog fight, I'm guessing she hurt it then and since I was so concentrated on her crest bleeding I missed it poor baby I'll treat her for it, glad it's only the one

Good thing that it was only one of them that has it!

Speaking about crest's, most of my little 3 1/2 week old mixed chicks are starting to show a cresting on the head's from the daddy. I was told that any that end up as pullets will lay mint green eggs later. I had one that was looking cockerel by bigger darker pink combs and the wattles were dropping down. I removed the boy. I am thinking that the remaining 5 are pullets.

@meetthebubus I'm so glad you caught it and can treat her :) Chickens should come into the world with a pair of work boots. They are on their feet from sun up to sun down and use them for everything.

Thanks for mentioning it!!! I feel bad I didn't catch it sooner It's kind of big but she doesn't even limp or sit she's so tough I'm not looking forward to this I'll have to go get some supplies as I don't have everything here like vet wrap or gauze or a scalpel but I have antibiotic ointment

I read you can use honey as a antibacterial before wrapping ....

Make sure that it is bumblefoot for sure. It seems very odd that soo many of your chickens are having it. Compare what your chickens have to this website. I have read it thru times before. BTW in over 20 years, have never encountered it.

The website Chicken Chick host is also a BYC member.
