Arizona Chickens

@BlueBaby do not send your ants here - I will cinnamon them!
@SMorrison7k I vote for 2 and 3 - I really like the ruffled feather on the white chickie
@MagicChicken How is the rehoming going?
@Diannastarr Hey we haven't heard from you in a while!! Hope all is well with you and yours.
We did get some rain. Mostly drizzle and a little shower or two but perfect for cooling and settling the dust. The girls were happy, happy, happy yesterday and then I told them this morning the heat was coming back! They all dissed me like crazy. I'm having trouble with lice and mites this year - treat, work over the coop and treat has been my motto this year. I've been hyper vigilant regarding cocci. Not much cold weather to do most of them in last winter. I discovered scaly leg mites on one of the girls yesterday! SO I just said to heck with it and ordered some PSP Elector - dang expensive but it should do the trick. I'm thinking I should spray the whole yard!!

Why would I send them to you? You're not the one with the squirrel stew! :lau

My niece is raising rabbits in Louisiana right now. It's been an experience for her since she grew up in Seattle.

Cool! I was living in St. Rose at the time (in the New Orlean's area going toward's Baton Rouge). There was a small group of trees behind the house. I have a few funny memories about the rabbits that I had. Had to trap a possum once that was eating the fig's off my tree, and the neighbor came over to shoot it for me.

Cool. Yeah they've kinda taken over her bf's mom's house and she's converted the whole covered garage with cages.. I think the town is Eunice.... She's doing lionheads, some cont. giants, and I can't remember what else.

I had mostly the N.Z. White's, but also had Flemish Giants, San Juan (almost look's like the wild ones), and a breeding pair of those Angora's. The female Angora didn't like her male though, and would fight with him. She wanted to breed with one of my White N.Z.'s though.

Last night was round 2 with lice on the girls :barnieI held each bird, hubs gave em a squirt of Permethrin under each wing, tail and light spray on their backs. I used my wet fingers to apply a bit on their heads around their combs and ears. Did the roost and pulled the nest boxes as well. Kicked the broodies out in the middle of the night and left em on the roost.
Everyone looks much better already.

When can I expect my hens to go through their first official molt? Is it a seasonal thing, or does it have to do with the weather, or their age? And ...silly question, but they stop laying eggs during a molt, correct? Thanks in advance everyone ;)

I read somewhere awhile back that the first molt will depend on when they were hatched. Hatched before Feb. will moult towards fall. Hatched after Feb. won't moult until next year.

When I had all of those Australorp's here, they were still laying eggs during the moult, but they had slowed down. It takes allot of energy and protein to lay eggs and moult at the same time. If they go into moult, increase the amount of protein for them.

@BlueBaby is right
They have to be at least a year old or close to it before they molt in the fall through winter, my buffs were early may chicks so their first fall they didn't molt they were new layers, this past fall when they were 1 1/2 yrs old was their first molt

How my flock did it was kind of amazing to me. Seems like egg laying is pretty important to Roo, he's really helpful in that area (thankfully marshmellow is following suit)

Anyhow most started molting and didn't lay they took a few months regrowing and then still didn't lay, meanwhile 2 girls didn't molt they kept laying so I always had a few eggs every week when the others started laying those two stopped and molted spotty molted super fast and in a few weeks was donevabd laying again

she regrew so fast she looked like a porcupine all at once

Goldie hardly molted at all

So I hear every hen is a different molter and different years can be different too but some of your hens may keep you in eggs like mine did it never stopped completely

I think my eggers will molt this year since they are late January babies
