Arizona Chickens

Well, it is a sad day at our house. My DS went out to the chicken pen this morning and found one of our favorite roosters, brown-red MGB, dead. Tonight when we were feeding and watering we noticed that another MGB, the rooster in my avatar, was missing. We found what was left of him on top of one of our pens for the showbirds, in pieces. We started counting chickens and found that our pullet, who was just recovering from the effects of lice, was also missing. We found her dead, too.

Thinking about it, this morning when I was getting ready to leave for work, I heard the chickens making a ruckus, so I went out and looked in the pen. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, other than the chickens who usually sit on the top perch were by the gate, but I figured they were up for the day. It was still dark, 5:30am, and I hadn't had any coffee yet.

Anyway, we found an opening in the shade screen and figure something got in there, but we aren't sure what. We have no idea what killed the three chickens, but we closed the opening and are keeping the light on all night until we can secure the pen more.

This is the first time anything like this has happened in the 4 years that we have had chickens. You can bet we won't sleep very well tonight.

Pimachickens-- If you are looking for the Avra Valley chicken lady that posts frequently on CL, she has been on vacation. She should be posting again very soon. If you can't wait for an add, I beleave that the people at Post Feed in Marana have her contact number.

I had an amazing hatch from the eggs Mahorni gave me. I have 7 BCM, 3 Marans (Wheaten I think)??Mahonri am I right?, and 5 Americanas. I had one Amrericana that didn't hatch.

I put in some from my flock and they hatched well too. I got 1 White leghorn/Buff orpington cross, 1 Easter egger/Buff orpington, and 2 either full Buffs or Barred rock/ Buff orpington mixes(I can't tell the difference in the buff and barrred eggs:).
This was a great hatch with only one not hatching

I will post pictures later.

Thanks Mahorni for the eggs, hopefully all of them will be hens, I don't need any more roosters. I have 19 roosters now, I think we are having a rooster fry next weekend. I will be keeping 3-5, but then the rest have to go. If anyone would interested they are all beatiful BCM roosters that are about 5 months old.

My egg turner will hold 42 eggs.

We are puppy raisers for Guide Dogs for the Blind. Will it be a problem to bring our dog?

So nice to meet you, your daughter and that beautiful lab girl!!!

I hope you get as great a hatch as Beverly did. she got 15 of 18! So that would give you 30 chicks!!!

That is a LONG ways to drive! Put them right in the bator!

Wahoo! We want pics!!!

Do you have pics of your BCM roos?, I might be interested in getting one if the coloring is correct.

I will get pictures of the roosters. I took a few of the chicks

This nasty little chick made a mess and guarantied that no other chicks get to sit on my couch...

Sorry not the best pictures. I will try to take more when I get a chance.

I was able to get a Brinsea real cheap from a friend, and I LOVE it. I pretty much just put the eggs in and don't worry about it, other than to add water every so often. My last hatch in my still air Little Giant was real bad and I had bought all the eggs 74 total and only got 27 to hatch. My husband said I needed to get a better incubator if I was gonna spend that much on eggs.
