Well, it is a sad day at our house. My DS went out to the chicken pen this morning and found one of our favorite roosters, brown-red MGB, dead. Tonight when we were feeding and watering we noticed that another MGB, the rooster in my avatar, was missing. We found what was left of him on top of one of our pens for the showbirds, in pieces. We started counting chickens and found that our pullet, who was just recovering from the effects of lice, was also missing. We found her dead, too.
Thinking about it, this morning when I was getting ready to leave for work, I heard the chickens making a ruckus, so I went out and looked in the pen. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary, other than the chickens who usually sit on the top perch were by the gate, but I figured they were up for the day. It was still dark, 5:30am, and I hadn't had any coffee yet.
Anyway, we found an opening in the shade screen and figure something got in there, but we aren't sure what. We have no idea what killed the three chickens, but we closed the opening and are keeping the light on all night until we can secure the pen more.
This is the first time anything like this has happened in the 4 years that we have had chickens. You can bet we won't sleep very well tonight.
