Arizona Chickens

NoSkiveez, I have a couple of fig trees but your cravings cone late. Figs are kinda over now (haven't had any in over a month). I have tons of cottontail and jack rabbits running around here. I put my fig trees along the south wall of a brick building in a 2-foot tall planter box I made from landscape retaining wall block. No problems with rabbits. I have to share the figs with some other critters though :-( .Wait until my cats get brave enough to go down there. I'll have all theh figs for myself. We put "chickenwire" around all our other trees and then something stronger to keep the deer out.

Mahonri - I made a small adjustment to my incubator just before lpck down. Yesterday should have been hatch day. I had 2 pip. This morning I had 7 hatched (Silkies, Wyandottes and an olive Egger). All of the B/BWA and Marans have pipped !!! This is so exciting!

I also noticed a difference in the way the marans feel in comparison to other chicks. They are way softer and fluffier than any other chicks of the same age, including Silkies!

I slightly lowered my temps about half a degree. Maybe this has been the whole cause of my issues!

NoSkiveez, Tuesday will work for picking up the eggs. I'll try and wrok out the timing and location tomorrow for Tuesday. re: fig trees, I understand aboutt eh rabbits. Most of the people around here have a gannon (sp) go over their yard occasionally to deter the prairie dogs, mice, and rabbits. I don't have one, and really don't want to pay someone else to do it, so I try to pick them off with a pellet gun when I get fed up with them. They killed one of my weeping plum trees, about 3 rose bushes, and made a mess of my garden. They have severely injured a few other trees, but I'm hoping I caught the damage in time.

Mahonri, hope the veterinary work is sucessful. I keep forgetting to wear a mask when I start cleaning out the coop to. Swear I'll remember next time, till I start again.

A coyote came onto the patio about 5 this morning and got 2 juveniles. I can't wait till they can't squeeze through the welded wire of the coop. Guess I'mgoing to have to run chicken wire around the whole bottom of it over the fencing. These were mixed chicks that I hatched, but I still hate it.

Lyongirl, good luck on the chicks. They are too much fun.

That's not true... the rabbits don't eat everything. Weeds, for example... :p

Sweet potato pancakes sound amazing!

Yes, with exception of weeds. I'm actually considering a goat for that. I hate weeds! When we moved back here there were weeds 10 feet fall and thats no exaggeration. we had tumble weeds everywhere. Just after we cleared all the weeds the wind blew good and I even had them growing in my potted plants. Now its cooled off, its time to tackle out door chores.

The pancakes were good. I made the batter really thick and added baby food to thin it until it was a bit thicker than plain batter and cooked them. I made sweet potato, butternut squash (they were the best), peach, banana apple, Peach and peas. The peach were sticky and didn't cook well. I make large batches of food and freeze things for the twins. It makes life easier and keeps them eating healthy food even when they are in a rush. Great way to sneak veggies into food too!

So far I have 4 SLW, 3 Silkies, 1 Olive Egger, 1 B/BWA, 2 Marans and lots of pips still to go! I'm going to add some gro gel thru a tube and leave them until tomorrow to see who pops out. I'm determined not to have my face pressed against the glass!

I freeze pancakes and waffles for during the week also. We just stick them in the toaster or eat them frozen depending on how much time we have.

This past weekend I made whole wheat blueberry/raspberry pancakes. I had to make a second batch because they ate so many I didn't have enough to freeze!

That is hilarious! I'm tempted to dig into a frozen Marie Calendars pie.

I've been waking up every morning at 3:45 am for the past week. I'd much rather be sleeping, but once I'm up, it's over.

Our fig tree is fantastic. We've been getting fresh figs since June. We've had a almost three weeks off, but it's loaded again and there should be ripe ones soon. If you haven't picked a fig at peak ripeness and eaten it directly from the tree, you're missing one of life's great pleasures. Thankfully, we don't have anything eating fig tree roots here.

A large red tailed hawk has moved in. We saw it fighting with the resident Cooper's hawk on friday right in the back yard with us there. Sat. morning they were fighting again and the red tail ate the Cooper's.

After finishing off the best parts of the Cooper's it proceeded to terrorize my chickens for the next 6 hours. My birds were out free-ranging when it all took place and we all had quite an adventure crossing the yard getting back to the safety of the run. Twice the Red tail took swipes at the chickens. Once it passed within 6' of me. The power of that bird was amazing. I have no doubt it could have picked up any one of my birds and carried it off. I'm afraid we might be under a new reality here with that thing hanging around. We will really miss the Cooper's. It was always good for some excitement.

DM -Nice chicks. Congratulations!

NoSkiveez: a goat would be fun. Plus, you could use the raw milk to make cheese!

I'm going to make butternut squash and sweet potato pancakes as soon as I'm done with my diet! I'm avoiding simple carbs and it is not fun. On the bright side, I've lost 5lbs and have 15 more to go
