Arizona Chickens

I lurk every day, but only post on occasion. Got my first chicks in April and now 5 of the 7 of them are laying. The lazy dark brahmas are free loading. I also have a batch of late July/early august pullets. Maybe will start laying in february or so? I don't know.

stay at home mom to 3, wife of a hero(fireman), 2 RIR, 2EE, 2DB, 1BO, 3Del, 3BA, 2SS. cattle dog and a beagle. wish I had a few nubian milking goats.

it seems that brahmas are nice to look at, but that's it. i can't seem to catch them without cornering them. they growl lke a cat and eat like a horse! i would get rid of them, but my 4 year old seems to like them for some reason.

NoSkiveez, Thanks a bunch for the eggs. They are safe and snug in the incubator. Haven't switched doors yet, will do it tomorrow, wanted to let things even out in there for a day.

Mahonri, the 7 surviving hatchlings are doing well, scratching up a storm and letting me know when they think they are running low on feed.

We need pics!!

I second the picture request. I will be taking some of my youngsters and posting them too. I've got some really pretty ones.

The Mesa Feedbarn has a rooster. I think its a black copper maran. He's $2 (I think he has scaly leg mites tho).

Today I made some modifications to my incubator. I wired in another heat lamp (I did not electrocute myself nor did I blow up the house), put two lower watt bulbs, moved the fan from the bottom to the top and put my water container up top. I have 3 hatching shelves and all 3 shelves have the same temperature. Before, I could only use the two middle shelves because it was too high or too low. I'm going to add another shelf and test temps again. The temp variations could very well be the cause of my problems. I hope this helps. I'm also going to redo my hatching covers to a thinner board. Its currently a 2x4 and I want to put a hinged lid on it so I can easily pull chicks out. Right now taking chicks out is a two person process.

I think I figured out why I quit counting the chickens, I can't count. Thereare actually 8 little guys running around.
