Petroleum Jelly or Coconut oil will still freeze BUT I'm not sure at what temperature. Probably not anything we may get although single digits is pretty low. In Alaska we would use Vaseline on the larger combed hens etc if we thought it was going to be lower than 30 degrees in the barn. It would happen if we had a long stretch of minus degrees (one year in the late 70s we had -60 for a week!) then we'd protect. The barn held our goats and rabbits so it was generally warm and getting down to 30 degrees was basically cold for them. I'm hearing the dog mushers have a suave that they use on the doggie's paws during Iditarod that might be useful for cold weather too. Don't know what it is and I haven't gone looking either. Stay warm friends - its cold here, especially in the wind.

Thunder, lightning, wind. Hubs said he drove through hail on his way home. We had a couple hours without rain but otherwise it's been fairly steady. Stay warm and dry everyone.

Everyone surviving this crazy storm? Apparently my girls are loving it! To my surprise there were 10 eggs out then this afternoon!

Yes it is Musher's Secret. Imagine putting on the paws in very cold weather for those long races - probably have to order it.
I just ran into Casa Grande for "chicken greens" to Food City and got poured on! While its 55/56/57 out there it felt really cold!! Girls still ran to the fence like I should feed them again! There was only about 1/2 mile visibility. Its trying to clear up again but the rain isn't stopping. Unfortunately we have to go out again tomorrow afternoon for doctor's appointments. YUCK~

My silkie egg's arrived today, and all 16 will be going into my incubator tomorrow. I ordered a dozen, but she sent 16. None were broken nor showed sign's of being cracked when I candled them. They are resting now in an egg carton.

22 egg's went in the incubator today... 16 silkie egg's, plus 3 brown egg's, and 3 blue egg's from my flock.

I'm afraid to look to see if the rain has stopped. The girls are not happy with me. Cover everywhere BUT the wind was blowing the rain in to their covered space!
