Arizona Chickens

I have 5 Barred Rock hens and 3 Cayuga ducklings that are just over 2 weeks old. I am going to build a bigger coop in the next couple of weeks so hopefully I can get more hens! What kind of chickens/poultry do you have?

I love Barred Rocks! Will your new additions be more of the same?

I kept some coturnix quail for a while. My current flock is all naked necks. I had a few Australorps, a couple Rhodies, EEs before. No ducks, my daughter lives on the other side of the valley and wants to keep a duck in my backyard

@Shellysstuff7 Chicken's can be addicting! When you get more hen's, what breed are you planning on getting?
I want to get Black Australorp hens. I had a Barred Rock before that was super sweet but the Barred Rocks I have now were about 4 months old when I got them and they are super skittish! I don't think the lady did much with them before I bought them. Every little thing freaks them out and they run around flapping their wings. I have calmed them down slightly. I have one that will eat mealworms out of my hand but the rest no way! I heard the black Australorp breed are super calm and friendly. I am just going to order them from a hatchey and raise my own next time.

I don't think so. I want to get Black Australorp next. I have read that they are a very friendly and sweet breed. I bought my Barred Rocks from a lady when they were about 4 months old and they were pretty wild. I am going to order my next ones from a hatchey and raise my own. That way they will be used to me.
Ducks are fun but they do make a mess. I have done a lot of research and have a pretty good brooder setup. I will try to take some pics and post them.

I'm in Kingman, AZ, and new to BYC. I already love it! Right now I have only one Aracana hen, a neighbor's dog killed/maimed the rest. We now have a fence around the yard, and the dog thing is going to court, so hopefully that problem is solved. Of course I will be getting more chicks soon, and am modifying the run and building a new henhouse. I really miss them running around the property and getting into everything I try to do,like dig a garden bed, when I used to let them out to forage.

So sorry for your loss. I also am in Kingman and are getting a late start due to family issues. We are expecting 9 baby chicks to come into this poor empty coop. Can hardly wait. Any advice for these chicks is appreciated. Looks like it will be a nice warm week for them to start out in.

I used to have Australorp's before I started doing my Naked Neck's. The Australorp's do go broody and want to hatch chick's. Mine picked the hottest time in the summer to try to do it. I sold all of my Australorp's.
