Arizona Chickens

Lice and Mites are nasty little buggers. Everything needs to be dusted as well as the birds, and then it needs to be done again in about 5-7 days.

Sevin 5% dust, or permectin garden dust is what I use to dust with. I take an old sock and put the dust in that. Then I pat down the chickens, pens, nesting boxes, everything I can dust. It usually looks like a white cloud when my DS and I get dusting. Luckily, we've only had to deal with it twice, in 4 years, but now I am constantly checking the birds, pens and roosts. I go outside at night and check their perches for roost mites, that only come out at night and feed on the chickens.

Good luck NoSkiveez! Hopefully, your birds will be bug free soon.

Thank you Angie. I've had mites twice. The last time was in older chickens and it wasn't nearly as bad and much easier to take care of. I'm thinking of investing in a dust spreader to make it easier to dust the coop instead ofthrowing hand fulls of dust (de) on the ground. Today I turned all of my chickens white and powdery. If this doesn't drastically help reduce the number of mites I see, then I will have to use Ivermectin to help with this problem.

I have to ask again because when I asked last time it was in the 40's at night.

My chicks are now 10 weeks old in an open air coop. Will they be OK without heat in the low temps that are coming tomorrow night?
(I'm in Gilbert)

In my youngin pen I have about 4 heat lamps with 250 watt bulbs. They range from 5/6 weeks to 12ish weeks. I've always kept a heat lamp for my younger birds. For me its not hard to do that because its right by the house.

Well, I'm off to beat some coyotes with a stick. They are trying to get in my coops and setting the burglar alarm off.

Hope you got the coyotes.

I just woke up and so I threw another 3 logs on the fire. nice and toasty in the family room.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!

I was woke up this morning, 5:48am, by 2 Japanese bantam roosters that are in my kitchen. We washed them last night for the show, so they spent the night in a carrier. I always thought that only 1 crowed, but as of this morning, I know differently. LOL

My chicks are 2 weeks old and are outside (not open pen though but chicken house with plenty of vents). They are in a horse trough. I have 2 250W heat lamps and covered part of the open top with aluminum foil. Checked this morning. We are low 30ies again - not too bad. They are definitely ok. Although don't know how much sleep they get, one of my lamps if white and quite bright.

Good morning everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!

Angie, I would have loved to hear that in my kitchen first thing in the morning. Hopefully, I'll see them on Sat.
