Arizona Chickens

What about the tiny baby ouchless hair rubber bands? They wouldn't be tight but won't fall off.

I tried those little rubber band's that are for chick's. They don't work so good if some of the chick's want to see if they can snack on the other chick's toe's. Sometimes they try to eat those type, and I don't like the idea that they can then swallow it.

I dont think the baby ouchless hair rubberbands are edible.. its more stretcht plastic, not rubber (which makes them ouchless). (I mean human babies, not chicken babies )

They are babies and will try to eat anything they can put in their mouth's, like human babies try to. I've read stories right here on BYC's where chicken's will eat paint, styrofoam, screw's, etc. Why wouldn't they try to eat "plastic" also? What I mean is that a beak can break those, and then the chick can eat it.

Just trying to be helpful.. i cant imagine them breaking that type of plastic.. try yes.. but if i cant break them, i cant see a chick breaking them. But.. it was just an idea. I am aware that they will eat anything they can.

I recommended Zipties many times to peeps needing to mark their chickens. One important thing is to make loop loose. Judge the size of the chickens' leg at maturity, and make loop that size+... This way don't need to redo half way thru the growth of chicken. Check your chickens for fit during growing stage. The large loops will not fall off, since chickens' foot is somewhat too large for loop to slip off. Another important thing to do is to clip off the excess flush clean with the "self locking head" This way a chicken can not grab the tail end, and tighten ziptie to constrict leg. Nail clipper works well as the tool.
I do have previous experience with legbands, because I used to keep pigeons. Most of the pigeon leg bands (permanent, and removable alike) are 8MM. 7MM for smaller pigeons, and there are larger sizes for larger pigeons.
Most chickens are out of the leg band range, unless special ordered.
Zipties are super affordable. :thumbsup
(I don't like to use the word cheap) almost implies inferior quality :idunno

I got you beat... 4% Neanderthal! Which all the crappy painful issues like arthritis are inherited from.. i also have every area, except 2.. people seriously get around!! 🤣

This is the type that I was talking about. https://www.amazon.com/Baby-Poultry...eywords=chick+leg+band'&qid=1606230384&sr=8-8

I know that you were trying to be helpful. I was just mentioning my experience with that.

I put them on the chick's leg, and found it in the brooder floor. The chick had it in it's beak and it had broken. It then just looked like a colored little worm in it's beak, and the other's were chasing that chick to get the prize. I pulled it out of it's beak. I use the zipties now.
