Arizona Chickens

What breed is he? Not Barred Rock. Right?...
He is a Barred Holland. They look like a Barred Rock, but lay white eggs. Peaceful & easygoing, they are nicer for white eggs than Leghorns. The eggs are not as large as my Brown Leghorns the same age lay, though.:( They are pretty rare, I got them from a breeder on here. Here they are together.

Have to share my first attempt at dyeing Easter eggs from the flock. A glass measuring cup jumped from my hand onto the eggs, resulting in some cracking. Hate when they do that. No idea why theyturned out sort of speckled. Maybe the ones in the store are treated with something? That just made them a little more interesting.

My Leghorn rooster was never this nice, and would chase the kids & dog! The Cocker Spaniel was afraid of "Mister Cocker".

It might be because he was raised by a show breeder, and his kids were picking up the birds and carrying them around. Maybe he just figured it's OK for humans to handle him.

I am pretty sure that the ones in the store are washed in a pretty strong detergent and bleached with plenty of chlorine in the rinse water! This is probably the "bloom" not all washed off. Very cool, I like how variegated they are!

I raised him, but his breeder got the line from a lady in Louisiana who shows them. I raised the mean hatchery Brown Leghorn with my little kids playing with them all the time. I think that the hatchery birds just have to be tough to survive.

Well, I didn't die any egg's for Easter, but I ended up very happy. I found someone that had some of the NN Aloha's, so I bought a trio of them. I just got them settled in a while ago. It's a cockerel and 2 pullet's, but it will be a couple month's before they will be good to go for breeding. I was going to create my own NN Aloha's, and these will save me some time.

Hi Everyone-

I am in Tucson. We just became chicken owners in November for my son's 4-H project. So, we haven't had to deal with summer yet, but I worry about how the heat will affect them.

I've heard a lot of people put frozen water bottles out so the chickens can lay against them when they get hot. So, I am planning on giving that a try, as well as, lots of water.

I've also heard that a lot of people put a box fan in the coop to get some air moving. I like the water sprinkler idea, I will have to consider that.

If you come up with any other ideas that work, be sure to let everyone in Arizona know. I've kinda grown fond of these little feathered friends of ours, and would hate to lose any of them.
I live in Tucson and I have used a mister to good effect. The coop has lots of ventilation and I make sure the water is in the shade. I have never used Ice or frozen bottles though.
