Arizona Chickens

Good morning everyone.

Shooter: Extremely sad. No matter what your political views, this is never the answer.
Everyone wants to know why so there is a lot of speculation.
I saw the same reports about the shooter being obsessed with Palin, though. Also that Palin attacked Giffords on her facebook page with a Rifle scope crosshairs over Giffords' place on a map (you can google it). Until he talks, though, nobody will really know why he did it.
If anything good comes of this, I hope it'll be that the hateful language stops and everyone calms down a little and can debate instead of fight.

U of A game: I know, that stinks.

Homeschool: I homeschool too. My oldest just got accepted to the U of A with a Merit Scholarship! We don't know how much yet, but we're very excited that she'll be attending my alma mater.

Help!:
I have a sick RIR. She has been in a cage in the bathroom for a couple of days now and hasn't changed much.
She is having trouble walking. She can half stand, but tends to stand with one foot on top of the other. She is alert and eating/drinking/pooping.
Her comb looks normal, although she has a dark smudge on it with a dark smudge on her head by the comb also. Could she have a head injury?
She can move around some but seems unable to control her legs/feet very well.
How can I tell if it's Marek's. She's over 1 year old, so I wouldn't expect it, but if it is how would I know? I have been reading about diseases but it's hard to pinpoint what to look for to make the final diagnosis.

Eek,

Fox News claimed it had seen a Department of Homeland Security memo which said Jared Lee Loughner, 22, had ties to American Renaissance, which is staunchly anti-immigration, anti-government and anti-Semitic.

Arizona Republican Gabrielle Giffords, the target of the mass killing, is ‘the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the US government. She was also opposite this group’s ideology when it came to immigration debate,’ according the DHS memo.

I

TT! :

Beckyhsinglsc - that doesn't sound good. How old is she? (I know you said over a year, but that could mean 10). I hope the others are okay.

Oh, sorry. She's just over a year. Hatched 10/09.
The other 4 hens seem fine, so far.
I also have 6 16 week olds in another coop that are also OK.

It just figures...the morning you need to get online to help your sick chickens, the internet stops working!

a2ms4chickens & NoSkiveez - Thank you for the offers of meds!! I am breaking out the phonebook and seeing if anything is open as soon as I post this. If not, I will probably be giving you a call Angie. (You are a lot closer.)

5pinkarrows - I got 6 new chickens a week ago. Wednesday I noticed 1 (Granola) had a swollen eye, I thought from being pecked. Thursday it was worse (puss and bubbles over the eye & more swollen) and I treated it with an ophthalmic antibiotic. Friday it was a little better, but the other eye was getting swollen and she was breathing very noisily. She did not move much that day. Also Friday, I noticed one of the other new chickens (no name yet) was staying by itself and had one slightly swollen eye. I treated all 3 swollen eyes with antibiotic. Saturday Granola spent the whole day on the roost (no food or water) and was still breathing very noisily. I discovered, when I got the ladder and got her down, that both eyes were sealed shut. I managed to get one open and the other unsealed, but still swollen shut, fed her 10 cc of water with a syringe and put her in a kennel. The other sick bird's eye was still swollen (a little more puss) and I put her in the kennel also. She was still eating. Both are a little better this AM, but still not good. Granola's breathing is not nearly as noisy and one eye is still mostly open. The other one's eye swelling appears to be down a little, but she has some face swelling on the other side now.

I hope I am wrong, but from reading the "medical" link, it appears they may have coryza or MG. (Which means I now have a closed flock.)

I took some pics:

They do not appear to actually be "rumpless" birds, dispite the lack of tail. The prior owner said they were molting and there was a bobcat attack a month ago. They have a lot of feather damage and missing feathers around the neck and "rump." The other 5 I got at the same time (another "rumpless" and the rest with 2-6 tail feathers each) appear healthy.

Beckyhsinglsc - I was hoping I could tell you it was old age. I have no idea

Hopefully someone who knows more about these things will post.

Crazier - it seems like there are lots of eye problems lately... did you see the pictures of Bob's rooster?

Good luck to both of you.

Yeah, he looked really uncomfortable! Thanks for the good wishes.

In another thread with a chicken that had a swollen eye, someone said "The bully eye is a sign of conjunctivitis which is comony associated with Infectious Bronchitis(IB) or Infectious Laryngotracheitis(ILT). "
