Arizona Chickens

A lot of chick raising advice for the rest of country may be timed wrong for us in AZ- especially Phx metro. In Phoenix (and even up north near Prescott since I have a large greenhouse) I would take advantage of the weather conditions and place a chick order at the shoulders of the hatch season (like first thing and last thing - avoid shipping in summer). We are in one of the few places that can raise chicks better in fall (or even winter) than in spring. Just my opinion.
I agree with that! With as warm as we start getting earlier in the year, the chick's hatched later have more time to adjust to the swing's in the weather before it start's getting too hot.

My Bielefelder rooster is doing his job so I can start hatching my own over here now. The other day I set 4 of the egg's from my flock for testing and when I candled them they all had the little spider thing growing in them. Yes, one of the egg's is from the NN hen as I still have her here.

Nice looking veggie's! I hope that snake doesn't get in to eat your egg's, or future chick's.
Yes I'm thinking about that too - this is in one of the rooster runs so all's well here for NOW. But I was thinking of putting a broody here with chicks in future so would need to secure this area much better if I do that.

Yesterday's field and garden happenings -- Some of these pics will inform you why I almost always wear boots and never wear sandals while doing my rounds...

I know he's a good snake and doing a job, I just don't want to be jumpy if he slithers near my foot and I land in a hole and break an ankle. So boots for me! I have a video of the snake slithering thru the chicken wire. He's just in the run - not in the secure area of the roosts.
that's a nice size snake, I know they get a lot bigger. I guess that means you shouldn't have rattlesnakes at least.

Yes he's about 4' long and not the only one. I've seen at least 3 different king snakes around. I'm glad for the rodent control and possible rattlesnake control. I've never seen a rattler here in Chino Valley yet.

I agree with this. Of course the girls don’t always agree and want to go broody in August

Yes, for us up in the north, September is an ideal time to buy chicks. They'll be fully feathered and off heat by November, at which time the temps outside may be mild, or dip to well below freezing. For me I have to avoid summer because we have heat up here and the chicks ship thru Phx DC, and I have to avoid winter because temps can dip to 10 degrees in a cold year, otherwise 25 degrees once thanksgiving hits.

Yup, I have hatched chicks myself and taken them out before, but it was a gradual change and before or after the 110+ stretches. Otherwise, forget it! I do like Fall chicks more than Spring, it’s cool for a longer period and they seem to adjust pretty quick. Sometimes in Spring we get pretty hot early.

Good morning AZ, happy weekend!

For those of you that have an instant pot, you can make cake in that baby and not heat up the house. The recipe I found says to make two layers, cooked separately, but I used a 6” Bundt pan I got on Amazon to make a single cake and it turned out perfect! I made a flavored glaze rather than frosting which took about five seconds
