If it is a wound that opens, it will also grow shut. Of course keep an eye on anything suspect, and if wound develops, treat with Blu_Kote, or Vetericyn. Mostly keep it clean. That is a good practice with all wounds, Chickens,,, dogs,,, and us people.

Last night was the first night in months that some of our girls were able to sleep without panting. Temps might even make it down into the low seventies over the next few nights.

I'm looking forward to not having to make ice runs anymore and actually spending time with the chickens instead of dashing out to do coop chores as fast as possible then running back inside the house.

Yes, sweaters! I was just looking through my sweaters last night. I can't wait to wear something other than "100 SPF" and "moisture wicking" and thin cotton. And scarves! I miss all my pretty scarves. And makeup that won't be sweated off in ten minutes! And wearing my hair down. It spends all summer up in a rather utilitarian bun.

Beginning on Tuesday they're predicting a full week of 100+ temps. I hope those are the last triple digit temps of the year. September is going out with a vengeance. Sheesh! Who decided that?

How is everyone doing in this heat wave? It's 111F right now. The chickens seem okay so far, we're making frequent ice runs to the coop and watching everyone closely on camera. I'm cooked. These temps are way too high for me. Just a few minutes outside and I feel like I'm going to throw up and pass out, in that order.

Even our usually energetic dogs just lay on the cool floor tiles and don't want to move. Trying to walk down the hallway is a dog slalom: hands on the walls for balance, stepping gingerly over the dogs who pretend we're not there. Getting any of them to stand up and go out into the yard to go to the bathroom is a chore.

The forecast says it's going to stay above 100 until October 6th. I don't remember seeing triple digits into October before. Longest summer I've ever experienced.

I had to turn the misters back on for the heat for mine. I had turned them off during those cooler days.

I got a phone call a few minutes ago asking me for more eggs. They don't hatch them. His wife does alot of baking. Last time they got 5 dozen from me.

I got my dog to howl the other day by playing a howling dog video on youtube.

This heat is the pits!! My girls have been doing ok, 4 confirmed laying a suspected 5th these last couple of days, my black astralorp laid what I believe is going to be my first double yolker, also found a softshell that someone laid on their sleep last night.

Came home yesterday and their water bucket was completely empty couldn’t find any leaks and today it was fine, I’m suspecting vandalism but who knows, maybe the dehydration caused the soft shell overnight.


They seem to be doing well today just marched themselves up onto there roosts for the night….

Re: the heat, we finally set up our coop with a little air conditioner. At 110+, I don’t think we could do anything else this past summer to keep them alive! It keeps the coop around 80-85 at the worst parts of the day. They go out into the run throughout the morning and evening, but generally prefer to hang in the coop throughout the hottest parts of the day.

That is a great idea. Can you link to the A/C you use? Is it a small window unit?
