Coyotes are common around here. They are most active from dusk to dawn when they hunt both singly and in packs. We sometimes see them during the day when walking the dogs but rarely near the house.
We have lights and cameras but mostly you have to have a predator proof coop and run. Two of our three temporary day pens are not coyote-proof, but the coop where the chickens sleep at night is. Kudos to my roommate who built that thing like a fortress. It even survived a tornado.
When we rebuild our permanent run and coop in a few months, it will be secure on all six sides and completely predator proof. At least that's the plan!
