Arizona Chickens

Good to know the poop is ok for compost.  My wife is already planning on composting with it for her vegetable garden.  City of Mesa give out free compost bins for just $5 deposit.  http://www.mesaaz.gov/waste/Backyard_Composting_Program.aspx
Oh yes great for your garden.. Bakers in Phoenix sell's chicken poo for $8.00 last time I was there a few years ago.
Personally I have tried 3 different compost bins... My favorite is the one that is above ground and you turn it.. Got it last year at Costco...

Hey everyone! So i have a few questions for the wise people here.
1. Coops. I would like to find a coop for my birds. I found out that i cannot build. And i have a very low budget. Any ideas?
2.Farmers Markets- Where can i find one thats good that is close to Queen Creek

There is a FM in Queen Creek, and several nearby. I like Super Farm because it's at an actual farm and they have a nice setup (you pay for all your purchases at the end with cash or credit). And it's indoors(ish) which is nicer in the summer. Every Thursday evening from 4:30-7:30 at Elliot and Hawes near the 202 and Elliot.

Mahonri, I think that is a pin cushion cactus. http://www.google.com/search?q=pinc...gXelIDYAw&sqi=2&ved=0CC0QsAQ&biw=1352&bih=601

For a couple of years in the sixties, 1966 and 1967 I think, we had weeks of rain all winter. Then again in the seventies we again had a couple of very wet winters. The desert was alive with plants that I had never seen before. God only knows how long those seeds had lain dormant.

Unfortunately, wet winters are followed by fires.

On Craig's list there is a fellow in San Tan Valley who custom makes coops... and all kinds and sizes.

I have 2 Huge Ash trees in my front yard, shame they aren't in the back for the shade. But one thing with them is they DUMP their leafs badly both at the same time in the fall, I'm talking 2" of leafs all over my front yard and blowing into the street making a hell of a mess. So you might want to make sure that your Chooks eating them won't do em any harm.

I have one in the backyard already. I planted it last year. It's sprouting out the new leaves now. I may just grab another one this weekend.

Be as creative and resourceful as you can. I have seen all kinds of chicken coops made out of or re-purposed out of so
many interesting things. The sky is the limit. I have seen people turn just about anything into a chicken coop as long
as it provides them enough space, ventilation, roosting/nesting and protection from the heat/cold, you can use it.
Living in AZ, I stay away from anything that will conduct the heat. check out the coop page here and on any other
chicken forum you can find. Also google search images of chicken coops, you will find many. Don't forget
craigslist as a source also. Have fun looking.
