We got a cupboard from star dust.. Brodway & Dobson area They have tons... $30.00 we use it is for them to lay their eggs..

Chickens are not real picky. Just about anything will work with them. My coop is made out of stuff I found in the alley. After elections, there is a plethora of building materials on just about every corner. Those political signs work great. My chickens live in the Obama coop.

Chickens are not real tall, so don't bother making one of those huge things you see other places. Mine is about 46 inches high. The lids over the coop section and the runs both lift up on hinges. I have easy access to just about all of the coop. It works fine for the hens, and it cannot be seen over the wall. It is out of sight and out of mind.

Arizona is real hot, and you probably really don't need a coop per se if you have good fences and lots of shade trees. Chickens are fine nesting in trees, but it doesn't do the tree much good.
Just make sure they have lots of shade and multiple sources of water. My sprinkler system goes off a couple of time a day, that cools things down.

thank you, I have had Vally Fever, no sure if more then once, it can seem like something else. I keep learning more about it the mor I read atticals. I never connected bird poop to feeding the fungus. Thanks again.

Quote: City Farm. You can get an idea of their size by the feeder dish they are on. It is a house bird feeder cup. A chicken would squish them. They can get out of the smallest hole and they fly real good. Those little buggers got away from me twice and GOD only knows how I was able to catch them! I tried to bring them inside, put them in a canary cage and the cats thought oooh sparrow for dinner!
I did find them a home tho. Person has other quail. They are cute but never will think of quail again. Even the normal size quail would never be able to run around free ranged. They would fly away!

Buttons are TINY! Babies are the size of bumblebees, to give you a reference. Adults are slightly larger than zebra finches.

Gallo we have missed you!!
Awww...that's so sweet of you! I don't think I'll be able to catch up on the thread at this point.

We've been hiking a lot over the past month and especially over the last week. We had the whole family off together for a week of fitness and hiking in the Catalinas. We hiked the Pima Canyon trail to the back side of Mt. Kimball (9+ miles, >1000' elevation gain), Finger Rock trail (10 miles, 4100'+ elevation gain--oh my aching knees!), Ventana Canyon trail (6+ miles, 1400' elevation gain), Blackett's Ridge trail (6+ miles, 1800' elevation gain), Agua Caliente trail (9+ miles, 3100' elevation gain) and Babad Duag trail (5 miles 1800' elevation gain). As Mahonri suggested, it's like a giant chia pet out there! The flowers have been stunning and the views jaw-dropping.

Mary has a good suggestion with the hoop coop. They require few materials and can be achieved without great carpentry skills. Also check out posts by SherrieT and MagicChicken; they've recently built similar hoop coops. Last year I made a chicken enclosure (can't really call it a coop) for a friend of mine using stuff lying around my yard and hers. We used an old dog run for the main structure and I had two 4' X 8' trellises made from 2 x 4s and covered with welded wire that we used for the roof on the other section. We covered the sides with welded wire I had left over from my coop. The roost is under an old awning from her house and an old chest of drawers serves as her nesting box. I don't think a dime was spent on this pen. My friend is ecstatic with it; she loves the fact that she can stand up inside it. It's a bit more open that I would prefer, but she's raised chickens all her life here in AZ with a similar arrangement.

Quote: The link is not the valley fever people in Arizona get. Histoplasmosis is another disease entirely.
Yep. Here's the page for our Valley Fever. When I was first diagnosed with cancer they found a lesions in my lungs they suspected were metastasized cancer. I had to get a lung biopsy (while awake) to find out for sure. They tested it immediately, while I was still in the OR on the table. The surgical oncologist came back and said, "I never thought I'd be saying this, but, congratulations, you have Valley Fever." I never knew I had it. Apparently, I was lucky for that too, the severity varies and can make for a miserable quality of life.
