Oh my goodness. Has anyone in southern AZ looked at the sky towards phoenix since these winds started? Blech ....... that's so gross. I was going to take my hen rotisserie outside for a little bit too as she is breathing much better, but.nevermind now.

Not in Southern Arizona, but I'm looking down South towards Phoenix and it's disgusting. To make it worse, it's blowing all of that Phoenix crap up through my area now. Once again, my oleanders spare my yard some of the winds and disaster, but it's slamming the blinds in the house around like a toddler throwing a temper tantrum. Yeesh!

I got a great deal on Zyrtec today, though. About a month ago, Target started ad-matching Amazon.Com along with a few others. Amazon has Zyrtec on for $29.15 for a 70-count bottle. It was regularly $39.60. They do, however, have the 45-count plus 15-free for $26.95. That's only a 3c per tablet difference, but every penny helps. Good to mention, since this wind is going to kill everyone's allergies today!

Hello! First post at BYC. I'm in Tucson, and yes, today it is incredibly nasty, especially downtown. I'm in the midst of building a small coop and run (from the Garden Coop plans), modified a bit to fit my yard and our climate. It'll look really pretty, but I have already spent more on the coop than I'd spend on a decade's worth of eggs!

Because of the size of the coop and run, I think I'm sticking with bantams. I'm hoping the smaller chickens will handle the heat better as well???? The coop/run will be shaded but obviously it'll still be hot.

Let's see, I'm planning on having 4-6 chickens total. For eggs, I'm planning on getting Bantam rhode island red, barred rock, easter eggers...and because they are irresistible, I'd like a couple of sizzles or silkies or frizzles.

In Tucson, where do y'all get your chicks? If you know of any place or person that has sizzles available, please let me know!

One more thing I was looking for advice on--I am planning to head over to the Pima County Fair small animal auction later this month...looking for some 4-H chickens to buy. I was hoping to get a couple of sizzles or silkies from a 4-H kid. I don't even know if chickens are part of the small animal auction--I'm assuming broiler chickens will be auctioned off, but what about the little bantams? If they are, it's probably not a good idea to get 4 birds from 4 different owners and throw them in a coop together?

* Definitely not. They'll each need their own space til they get used to each other. 4-8 wks. Rhode Island Red Roosters get crrrrrranky as they get older. The Barred is a good choice. Silkies too. I have a Frizzle. I've been Hand raising him and hes kinda docile. The female, well, shes bossy. Can totally tell the difference as to the Raising.

Our family had tons of chickens in SW Tucson. They've been sold off down there but if ya can find 1 from the Ewer Farm, as it's been called, you should get some great eggs. My uncle was well known down there. He was very knowledgeable and passed that on to lots of people.

Also the Maricopa County Fair is this week. There should be some poultry worth checking out. ;-)

Oh & if you baby chicks I see no problem with them all being together..
Our flock did not accept 3 others for about 4-5 months.. Now they are good.. Still some pecking
no blood.. Just a quick peck to say " don't try & invade my space" other than that they are a flock,
calling to one another when they can't find each other when they are in the front yard..

Wwe hand raised them all. They are very docile & come when I say "buds, or treat" I am thinking of increasing
their vocabulary.. I know ya all are laughing at that one..

The Tucson Poultry and Pigeon Fancy Fowl Club, of which I am a member, has many members who keep bantams. Some of us will have birds at the County Fair Open Show which is the Friday through Sunday before the 4H show. You can talk with exhibitors and possibly find what you want. Anything you buy from a breeder/shower is going to be infinitely better than feed store/hatchery stock! And you will be supporting the local folk. I only raise large fowl, so can't help you out with bantams.
