Arizona Chickens

*
Wow, you're garden came in absolutely beautiful and lush!  I haven't had the time to finish sewing the cloth wrap to put around our garden to keep the girls out, so my wife's looks extra empty.  I think, for the most part, we've missed the main planting season this summer.  I'll have to go back through the calendar and find out what will work.  I got busy with the new coop all weekend, which is a good thing, since I'll be chicklet sitting 25 Speckled Sussex for AlohaChickens.

We're interested in some of your leftovers, too.  It'll give my wife a chance to see your setup and ask questions if she wants.  I'm definitely jealous, though!

* You could still squeeze in Radishes. 21 Days to Harvest. I'll plant til Mid April or so, in my garden. I put it on the East side of my house so I get shade during the afternoon. I run a Mister from now til ?¿. It keeps the ground temps cooler. And everything I seed, grows. Snap peas, Radishes, carrots, onions, lettuce, corn, bell pepper, etc. Tomatoes are a little trickier. Even though it's always 7-10 degrees hotter out here, during the summer, than anyy where in the Valley, my veggies do great.
If anything, start some stuff in the house and put outside, at night during the summer. I just started tomato, bell pepper, and a watermelon in my house. So far, so good. :) *

This what it is looking like now, Thurs, Fri, and Sat, I hope to be able to be at the fair a few hours. I have family coming in also. What I will have is feed quality greens. I could meet at the fair grounds parking lot. I have to pull it today. I can put the roots in water, that should keep most of it alive or fresh.

This is what I have right now. 1 wheel barrel and 2 large crates.

And my lovely garden..... Starting over... That is what a garden is all about.

I should have lettuce food for people. It is moving from tasty to strong and some of the leaves are getting tuff but it is still good. I used NO poisons on my garden. The only thing that needs to be washed off is living things for us, protein for animals. I really hate to see it wasted, animals (goats and chickens would love it).

Hi all,
I don't post much, but read everything

I live in Tucson and teach 1st grade. I was hoping to hatch out some chicks in my classroom this spring. Would anyone have an incubator that I could borrow long enough to hatch some chicks? And of course a couple of fertile eggs would help

We have a little roo (serema mix kinda guy) and we would have a few to hatch but would like some regular size guys too.

Thanks in advance for anyone who can help or knows someone that can help

Do you work for a public school? If so, your district probably has a resource office that could provide an incubator. Some districts will even loan resources to private or charter schools...

Make sure you have something to do with the chicks after they are hatched...not ethical IMO to hatch without a plan already in place for what will happen to them afterwards. There is a preschool/elementary school here that hatches eggs for me every year (for the last seven). Occasionally a child or staff member will ask to have one of the chicks--I deal with that on a case by case basis, but the up front understanding is that I get back all the chicks they hatch.

We came home to a much larger egg than normal today. We normally average between 55 and 59 grams from our Barred Rocks. Our first abnormally large egg last month was 68 grams, but our one today was a massive 79 grams. Yeesh, that's gotta hurt.

Ok wow that is nice of you!! I will call you later working late this evening.. Home after dark
Can't wait to see our new loves.. Those babies need to be held as soon as I get home, weather they like it or NOT!!

I'm going tomorrow after my appointments. I will be going Fri. And will try to go Saturday. Have family coming in town this week end, so I am deviding my time there. Plan to spend time in the poultry barn.... I know that is the last place any of us would hang out at. :gig

I should be able to get to the grounds about noonish. I will bring my chicken and goat food with me if anyone wants some of it. Goats would go crazy for the stems and stocks, crunchy and succulent. And you know chickens and vegetable leaves. Again no poisons used. They will not stay good for long, I have them in water right now.

There is a lot of it. Shame to wast it.
