Arizona Chickens

Just looked it up, it is robé, there are other names.
[Quite]
The young leaves of these plants as used in cooking are either the same as or the South European equivalent of turnip tops or turnip greens.
Rapini has many spiked leaves that surround clusters of green buds that resemble small heads of broccoli. Small, edible yellow flowers may be blooming among the buds. The flavor of rapini has been described as nutty, bitter, and pungent. Rapini is a source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as potassium, calcium, and iron.[2]
The cultivated vegetable probably descends from a wild herb related to the turnip that grew either in China or the Mediterranean region. Rapini is similar in shape to the Chinese Brassica oleracea cultivar called kai-lan. Rapini is now grown throughout the world. Rapini is available all year long, but its peak season in the Northern Hemisphere is fall to spring. [un-quite]

My girls have been enjoying my pruning. I have a lot of different onions planted for summer. Next week I am going to tackle my #2 T-frame. Watermelon, cantaloupe and squashes. More Black Eye Peas, maybe more pole beans.

this T-frame has 30' of Tomato's, mostly heirloom indeterminate hight Tomato's, Cucumbers, Egg Plant, Christmas Lima Beans, Kentucky Pole Beans, and Black Eye Peas. I hope my Tomato's finish before the Monsoon. I have some a little more then 4' tall right now. I have been really bad at keeping up with the pruning. My bees are loving the flowers.

Yes, we do have a farmers market. I am not ready for that yet. I do not know if this one rents a spot or takes a % of what you make, or you have to have a membership, or a combination. I would need a set up, tables and such. All very doable at some point. Right now I am trying to work out planting and what crops when, spacing needed. I am supplying my mom & nephew, my sister and her family, and I, with produce. When I have to much I give it away, to neighbor s and Food Banks.
I know that there are some farmer's markets that purchase veggies from the farmers to sell (although a booth of ones own is available, too). The one near me is like that--they can tell you where the veggies came from, but can't answer all questions--such as the specific variety of yellow cherry tomatoes they had (a question I asked). So that would be a way to start...

Bonnie I am so looking foward to seeing your garden. Please tell me that you added some nutrients to the soil mix !I have been killing myself digging in goat and rabbit manure. I hope to see results some time in June. Up north the nights remain cold. Enjoyed your photos from the MCF.

I was getting ready to put 15 eggs into the bator when I noticed my EE has gone broody. I rather she do the work. LOL I put 14 under her. Is that to many for a first time broody?

Well, AlohaChicken received her shipment of Speckled Sussex today and she brought them over. Then again, she also received a dozen Barred Holland as well, with her name on the package, but she didn't order them. As I'm sure you can guess, it's not like you can just slap a "Return to Sender" stamp on the box. She called Ideal and they said to keep them. So those are going up for sale. I was looking them up and they are very similar to the Barred Rocks, except seem to be inferior in all ways. Smaller size, less egg production, less life expectancy. They are a dying breed by all accounts.

Out of 25 Sussex, only 18 made the shipment alive. An extra one was having it really rough, and despite my wife's tender loving care, I had to cull it tonight, too. There just wasn't any way it would have made it to the morning. So 17 out of 25 made it.

On a positive note, those others seem to be doing well and are becoming much more active the last half-hour. They took their evening nap and are ready for another round. Given the choice between the green recovery gel stuff and the fermented feed, hands down, they are going after the fermented feed. I'll post periodic pictures as they grow, since everyone loves chic-pics.

Despite having plenty already, my wife may end up keeping one or two if things work out and more survive than what Aloha needs for her breeding program. I definitely need to get our bigger coop finished this weekend, because by the weekend after that, I'll need these girls in the "Little Red Henhouse" and the older ones in the new one. Oh, the work to be done!

Night all.

Thanks, I'll send you a PM in a week or so. I apologize for my ignorance, I've lived in AZ forever, but is Claypool near Tucson?

eta: looked it up, near Miami right? I'm going to do my best to find chicks a little closer, though we were just in the area, camping near Roosevelt!

etaa: checked out your blog--nice!

Yes, Claypool is between Globe & Miami; blink & you'll miss it ;-) Right now I am going down to Queen Creek several days a week to help my daughter that had back surgery; that will probably go on until mid-May so can always bring chicks down with me to her house. Or you could stop by on your next camping trip!

Funny from the Tonight Show,,,,Intsa-Chick

That was totally awesome!! I can't believe people fall for stuff like that - too funny!

Yesterday was my birthday and I asked for a grow-out coop... I got it! Put the babies all out today and they loved it. It shares a wall with my big girls run so they can get to know each other. I still have some pretty young ones in the group and the nights are still too chilly so they will just go out during the day for now. I also got a grapevine which I planted today to grow up one of the sides of the run for summer shade.
Today I got this ENORMOUS egg from one of my ducks - I think my Jumbo Pekin. It ended up being a double-yollker.

Ok... weird, I edited this post to try and get the photos to work and they still aren't showing up! They show up in the post as I am writing it, but they are not showing that they are even in my photo albums. They are from my hubby's iphone, so I will have to figure this out and show you pics tomorrow...
