Arizona Chickens

So, my poor hen Jim became broody the same day she escaped the jaws of a coyote. I guess it seemed like a good time to lie low for a few weeks. We got her some fertile eggs from DesertMarcy and she now has nice mix of 10 SRO, FBCM and GNHR chicks. I guess it's an old-world sort of mix.

It's so awesome to have chicks again.

Here are the bold Russians:

A cute German New Hampshire Red:

An inquisitive French Black Copper Marans:

Since I had the camera out, I took a few shots around the yard.

Here's the strawberry planter that has been blasting out strawberries for a month now. Even after we devastated it yesterday, there are a few remaining.

Some extra good and local lettuce:

Quote: i agree she is still very chick like.
at the very end of the video tho it looks like maybe she is limping? i couldnt quite tell but i'd check out her feet just in case. and make sure she doesnt rest too much on her hocks and they are swollen. other than that, cute baby you got there.

She doesn't seem too bad...she looks more "stiff" than anything. I have limited experience, but it sounds lie she's still making chick sounds...I don't think she'll be "accepted" as one of the flock until she's old enough to not make the baby noises. I always wait to integrate chicks with hens until they are making adult noises and not chick noises. They are probably not allowing her to roost as she's still a chick and she'll definitely be lowest in the pecking order. If she's getting food and water, and she has plenty of room to get away, I'd just wait it out. But if she is still being picked on excessively and especially if you notice injury or plucked feathers, you'll have to separate her. Once the other hens see a sore or wound, they'll tend to pick at it.

You know, it never occurred to me that she still peeps like a chick. She cries at night for a while before it gets fully dark. She has no wounds and the pecking has mellowed out, so it should be fine, but I will continue to watch her closely for a few more weeks.

Woohoo!!! Since my sons birthday we had 4eggs in three days, none yesterday and two so far today!!! Only the reds are laying right now. Can't wait for the orps. I want to see their eggs! One of the ones I got today had a little blood on it. From what I understand this is normal for a hens first times laying. Is this correct? Should I go intrude my ladies personal space and check for anything?

That is great that your broody was able to hatch the eggs you got from me! Sounds like most of them hatched.

Hi all, I just put an ad up on 1 to 8 week old chick category. Selling heritage chicks as well as turkey poults. Of course if you are local, you can come pick up and save on shipping.

Wow, again gallo!! Always love to see your set up!!

yes it is normal for pullet eggs to have a little blood, they are still adjusting to their new, somewhat intrusive, requirements of being an egg layer.

we are working backwards on the coop. we are building it condo style since i want 2 separate pens. with the main house in the center that will have a removable middle wall that will go all the way to the ground. and 2 runs going in opposite directions. well the 2 runs are done! next we are going to work on the raised platform that will be the foundation of the actual coop. and maybe if theres time we'll work on the coop frame. i'm so excited its actually coming along really quickly. a 2x4 section of the roof of each run is going to be a raised garden bed/living roof kind of thing. i might only be able to keep cactus alive up there but i'm going to try vegetables first, who knows...
will post pictures when it starts to come together.

Hey all. I posted a thread in the sick/injured forum for one of Sommer's chicks, but I thought I'd post a reference here, too. She has this strange Head Twitching and Garbled Squawk going on. Any ideas? I won't expand on it too much here, though. I'll try to keep it in the original thread and it has video with it.

Thanks ahead of time.
