Arizona Chickens

Hey all. I posted a thread in the sick/injured forum for one of Sommer's chicks, but I thought I'd post a reference here, too. She has this strange Head Twitching and Garbled Squawk going on. Any ideas? I won't expand on it too much here, though. I'll try to keep it in the original thread and it has video with it.

Thanks ahead of time
My Cuckoo Marans hen, Phoebe, does this on occasion when she eats too fast. Sounds as if something got stuck in her throat and she makes that sound. It goes away after a while or if she takes a nice long drink. I hope this is the case with the chickie.

I can eliminate the EEs, Whinny, and Lucy. I think it is Blondie, my Buff Orpington (mix)
There is Picker my Black Sex Link

or Bon, my Blue Wyandotte or a Blue Orpington or a mix, not sure.

Is it Blondie's egg? :D

My feed store just got Toulouse goslings!!! Aaand I think I convinced my husband to let me get one!
Do any of you have geese with your chickens? I think she will be a house goose, but she will get lots of time outside while I'm out there working.

Good evening Folks!

I know it's been a couple of days but we've been...

...well, you know.

My students won several medals at two different welding competitions. 2nd & 3rd in Oxy / Acet and first in TIG at Eastern AZ College on Tuesday and then completely swept the Best of the West Wednesday at Mesa High - 1st & 2nd in beginners, first in advanced and best team build.

The house is coming along. We got up and were on the roof at 6AM today and worked till 9 when we had a grandson's b'day party.

We are just kicking back recuperating now; it's back on the roof again tomorrow morning.

The cluckers are ding splendidly - laying their little hearts out.

I'm still undecided as to how to obtain the next batch of chicks. I really want to go with a local breeder but I'm also wanting the variety I can get from Ideal or McMurrayr's. I checked out my pet chicken but they want real live money for those chicks...

Decisions decisions...

Hope ya'll are doing well.

Yay!!! We had our first Free Range afternoon. I let the girls out around 5pm and it took about 5 minutes before anyone was brave enough to leave the run. Then they stayed close together for a while before some splintered off. About 6:20 a few girls headed back into the run and by 6:45 everyone was back in.
Button was brought out by hand and taken back in by hand and she has a definite limp. I massaged the leg she is favoring and she had no issue with that. I had a chat with her about making big girls sounds so she will better fit in.
The wife and daughter and I all chaperoned this party and poor old Dyna had to stay in the house. She was whining the whole time. Poor girl. I wanted the flock to have a hassle free first time out without a crazy old dog chasing them.

great evening!!

yes it is normal for pullet eggs to have a little blood, they are still adjusting to their new, somewhat intrusive, requirements of being an egg layer.

we are working backwards on the coop. we are building it condo style since i want 2 separate pens. with the main house in the center that will have a removable middle wall that will go all the way to the ground. and 2 runs going in opposite directions. well the 2 runs are done! next we are going to work on the raised platform that will be the foundation of the actual coop. and maybe if theres time we'll work on the coop frame. i'm so excited its actually coming along really quickly. a 2x4 section of the roof of each run is going to be a raised garden bed/living roof kind of thing. i might only be able to keep cactus alive up there but i'm going to try vegetables first, who knows...
will post pictures when it starts to come together.

love it, can't wait to see the condo. I said some time ago I wanted to do the same. I am building my coop with a provision for an addition latter. I will be installing a door that goes no where. When I add the other half I will have 2 different partitions, one solid, the other a screen. The door will be the solid partition.

You can get any type of wood you want. I will try to find were we got our hard woods when I worked in a high end mill works. Of course there is Home Depot with a limited selection. I have boxes of the stuff in 1/2 -1 1/2 inch widths and 10" to 14" long. They are the stuff left over after sizing the planks. It is all over 10 years old. I gave several bundles ways about 5 or 6 years ago to a model boat maker.

They look all gray... But they clean up nicely. I have been wanting to glue a bunch together but I do not have the right pressure clamps. To make something of them. If anyone wants some PM. I have plenty, bass wood, mahogany, teak, maple, oak, and how knows what. Right now it is all gray and very, very dry.

So, my poor hen Jim became broody the same day she escaped the jaws of a coyote. I guess it seemed like a good time to lie low for a few weeks. We got her some fertile eggs from DesertMarcy and she now has nice mix of 10 SRO, FBCM and GNHR chicks. I guess it's an old-world sort of mix. :D It's so awesome to have chicks again. Here are the bold Russians: A cute German New Hampshire Red: An inquisitive French Black Copper Marans: Since I had the camera out, I took a few shots around the yard. Here's the strawberry planter that has been blasting out strawberries for a month now. Even after we devastated it yesterday, there are a few remaining. Some extra good and local lettuce:
hydroponics! Fantastic. Looks wonderful, thanks for te pics

Does anybody in the Tucson and/or Pima County area have Jersey Black Giants? Am thinking of getting a few & wanted to talk to locals with firsthand knowledge. Even better if you have fertile eggs or chicks to sell or trade.
