Arizona Chickens

Quote:
I have an ailing hen right now too. I also made the "no chickens to the vet" pledge and I don't think I could cull so I guess Opal is on her own. Her abdomen is swollen and red and she is waddling around. I tried all the egg-bound cures but nothing seems to help. It's been getting progressively worse over the past week or so.

Also, A couple of weeks ago one of my hens was laying on her side and couldn't get up. I brought her inside overnight and she was completely fine in the morning. I guess scorpion. We have a lot of them even though my husband "hunts" them a few times a week. The last chicken that got stung wasn't so lucky. We saw her get stung and she died almost immediately.

I am wondering? :/ From what I have observed over the years of wanting chickens, when I would watch a hen with chicks, and if there was a rooster, he would be circling them watching. One more then one occasion I would see him chase other hens away if they got close. I went to YouTub, and found a number of videos of roo's protecting. Is this in the roo's job description? Also I noted that when there was many roosters, each had between 1 and 3 lady's. when able to free range is this the normal ratio of Roos to hens? I never thought I would have them myself, so when I saw them in a field or yard I took as much time as I could to just watch.

That's good news! With my first (and only) broody and chicks, I didn't have a rooster. The rooster I have now is one of the chicks she raised! He's really a good roo, so it will be interesting to see how he reacts to chicks...if any hatch. If none hatch, I'll be in the market for a few day old chicks!

I'm not holding out a lot of hope for Button right now. He limp looks worse, yet I can't find anything wrong. Now she just sits around mostly because moving is difficult. Last night, my wife said she couldn't make it up the ramp to the coop so my daughter picked her up and placed her inside. She can't roost at all, not even on the 14" high roost I added for her.
I already told the wife I won't be taking any chickens to a vet. If they go south, I'm gonna cull them. I'll watch Button for another week and decide then.

We won't do the vet either - spend enough on the dogs! So, hard as it would be, we would also cull. However, I would try the following first... 3-4 drops of Poly-Vi-Sol 2x's a day, some extra treats of scrambled or hard-boiled egg, and some plain yogurt. I would do this for about a week and see if you see any improvement - just in the case that it's some kind of deficiency. Do you put UPACV in their water?

No not separated. We were going to build a small tractor to move her into.. Still haven't done that..we will need to do that tomorrow.. Will she be upset?

19 small to med size eggs.

We have the 2 week old chicks out front in a make shift tractor.. The hens have not tried to go up to them aggressively.. Or kent our roo..
My plan, whitch might not work.. Is to let her hatch out the new little ones. Then switch the older one with her new little ones???
Advice..

Day 21 is April 29th.. Our incubator eggs came early.. Like 2-3 days.. So we could be early as well..

Congrats in advance if I don't check in..

If you do decide to move her, you need to do it in the dark so that she wakes up in her new surroundings.

Whats UPACV? If it's poultry Gatorade, then yes, but not every time I refill it. I have to get some Poly Vi Sol.

Unpasteurized apple cider vinegar "with the mother" - I think Heinz makes some now that you can find at the grocery store. I use Braggs brand. It has to have "the mother". 1 teaspoon of ACV to 1 quart or 1 Tablespoon per gallon. Will be good for all your chickens. The Poly Vi Sol is a liquid infant vitamin - make sure you get the one WITHOUT IRON. Just drop it on and around the sides of her beak until you think she got about 3-4 full drops in.

Thank you, I did not know about poultry vitamins, so I put aviary vitamins I gave my budgies in their water. Iron in vitamins? That is not good for chicks? I will have to look at the label. I have been coming to the opinion as of late that for people and the like, to many supplements are superfluous or even harmful. A good diet is best. Stress is the most harmful, it has taken its tole on me, I can imagine what it dose to animals. The body has a hard time, I wonder if this is when supplement need to be given because it seems stress keeps the body from working the way it was designed. Adding in that foods just are not as rich in nutrition to day do to a combination of facts, not just depletion of soil. I am beginning to wonder if adding nitrogen to the soil is sufficient, it helps plants go, but dose it give plants what they need to help us grow. Maybe the old fertilizers are better for us, helping the plant grow is second. Dose anyone know if there has been a study on this?

I just remembered! I have been wanting to ask, has anyone heard of Gabbard Farms? A lot of places say they have prize winning stock.. . . But do they. Pictures can be misleading.

This is how I am gardening this year... supposed to make a HUGE difference in nutrients in your produce. In addition to watching the main film, I found the video clips under the FAQ's to be very helpful.
