Arizona Chickens

Thanks all!! I can't even tell you how relieved I am that it's finished. With them getting so much bigger, I hated having them in that prefab (even though it was a "3-4 chicken coop". Bollocks. I'd come home and they'd be chomping at the bit to get out. And I look forward to having my weekends back. I still have some painting to do, just cosmetic stuff though to go with the Chicks of Hazzard theme. My neighbor was disappointed we covered up the mural with the aluminum cloth. But needs must. It'll be unveiled again in the fall.

So, LadyKD, I know what you mean about things taking longer than you expect. I swear for weeks (if not months) I've been saying, "we don't have much more to do, we're getting close). Even with pushing this weekend, we worked sun up until after dark Friday through Sunday, then from 6-1 today to finish. And on Friday I thought we'd be finished. Again Saturday... Sunday. You get the idea. Everything takes longer than you'd think. The coop looks great though!! Lots of creative ideas.

Notinoz, I was thinking of you when I said the spiral staircase. That made me laugh. Rosco and Boss Hogg did figure it out though and went up to roost tonight, so we were really happy about that. They are just sitting right in the doorway of the roost though, half in half out. Kind of weird. But they seem really content, they're very quiet. So I'm just letting them do their thing. I also LOVE your coop! It's cool that you have the wings like that, I bet that'll be great for when you have chicks and stuff. Very cool!!

And Madd Baggins, I actually repeated your "my dog eats chicken poop like I eat chocolate" today, LOL. I mentioned to my husband that you had a poop loving dog too. Nibbler used to be excited to see the chickens. Until she learned that their butts produce tasty magic drops. Now she gets so excited to go eat poop. She hardly even looks at the chickens except to scoot them out of the way if they are standing on poop.

ooh, i'm so excited because we are modifying the top of the runs with raised flower beds. we went to a chain home improvement store the other day and they have a 15" square of tiny succulents. i love it and if thats all i can grow up there i will be happy, they're so cute.
also, DH is going to try to install a solar panel on the roof!
I think the garden on top is a great idea, should keep the chicks cool too

HAHAHAHA I'm not sure if its because im very tired but the narrating in this made me die!!! "Just give me the poop and nobody gets hurt" I wish my dog would do that but all she does is try to bask with the chickens and ends up getting pecked near to death.

LOL! Does it make me a bad dog mother that I would really like for that to be my cleaning system?!? Also, don't know if you noticed (I only just did) but right around the 2 minute mark on the video you see Nibbler beeline it to the old coop to bat cleanup there...

This chickens do peck at Nibbler a little, mostly her fluffy tail. But she's so focused on the poop she doesn't seem to notice...

DRAMA YESTERDAY MORNING:

IT'S a CINCO de MAYO MIRACLE!!

Remember yesterday we took the remaining cold eggs out from under the broody who had kicked them aside and the eggs were cold? We candled them and put the big green egg and one of the brown eggs into the Brinsea with the other 25 eggs due on the 18th.

Well, the brown egg is ZIPPING!!!

I may yet have a NAKED NECK!

AND THEN LATER.....

Quote:
I didn't dare put it under the broody, as I figured at this point she'd kill it.

IT ZIPPED IN LIKE FIVE MINUTES!!!!

So, I stole two Delawares from the Broody Mama and put little "Milagro" (that's Miracle in Español) in the Laree brooder with them.

My kids were freaking at the NAKEDNESS of the neck!!!

So I'll do an "eggtopsy" on the green egg in the morning and try to figure when it expired. Probably just hours before I rescued it's mate and put them in the bator.

Then it's waiting on the other 25 eggs.

I was very pleased that 11 of the 12 Aloha eggs are developing nicely.

The super dark olive eggers are impossible to candle so they stay until the 18th.

Should be a fun hatch in 11 days!

Thanks to Tab and Sommer!
