Arizona Chickens

If anyone is looking for rare chicks, I will have some started ones ready in a few weeks. I just hatched out Sulmtalers, Buff Laced Brahmas and Gold Laced Brahmas. The silkies are still cooking and are spoken for

i certainly hope not!

i got half of the shipped brahmas to hatch, that's coming all the way across the US, they ALL had detached air cells really horrible. even worse, when i candled, i only threw out 1 egg for no development. 17 into lockdown, 9 hatched and one died about 10 hours later. So i have 8 gorgeous babies! the others i didn't open but candled, fully developed but didn't pip.

That is sad for sure. The PO seems not to care that live embyros are in the eggs. Poor little egglets.

FWIW, I really don't think it's Marek's. The way you keep your birds would very much limit their exposure. No wild birds can get into your enclosure and you've free ranged only a few times. Add that to the indication that only members of the order Galliformes carry Marek's, the risk of exposure you'd have would be airborne from other chickens in the neighborhood. It's possible that an intact airborne virus could make it from a neighbor's flock, but I think the risk would be low.

Thanks Gallo, that is true.. I think the chicken is doing better today, I took her out and bribed her with some corn to make her walk. I'm pretty sure she is limping a little less than before.

I think I found the cause - My husband mentioned that he's terrified the chickens a few times in the middle of the night... he lets the dog go out to potty, and sometimes accidentally slams the screen door. I guess the noise makes the chickens flip out and fly/crash into the sides of the coop.

MamaHenChris....

I know you have used your silkie to hatch out ducklings... did you mist the eggs at all? I have heard people on here say that you need to add extra humidity, especially if you live in a dry location??? What is your thought on that? I think it's too late for me as my ducklings are due to hatch over the next couple days if they are indeed viable. My white silkie "Cloud" has been sitting on 7 Pekin/Rouen mixed eggs that I will be giving to my sister when she is done raising them. I am getting so impatient and hope that at least a few of them hatch!!
Also, how long past 28 days should I wait?

The eggs that are under my broody are due to hatch tomorrow! Fingers crossed for a good hatch.

Thanks ChicksofHazard!! After some research I figured that out. That Pet Club actually carries feed. I'm sure it's limited but we will see this weekend. Have some chicken projects up my sleeve.

I did not mist the eggs. I had never heard that before. I did have to help the little one though as the membrane dried a bit while it was zipping. I used a cotton swab to dab the membrane to moisten it. That may not be the case for you but keep an eye out. I am not an expert on how long to wait but maybe 3 days. Hopefully some duckie people will chime in and can answer that one. I only had 2 eggs and one was a dud so that was easy for me. Good Luck. Can't wait to see your little peepers.
