Arizona Chickens

So there is all sorts of craziness at my house. My broody hen hatched out her chicks the same day I had my baby. (chick pics to follow). My rooster dislocated his middle toe sometime when I was gone. He's fine, hardly limps at all but it looks awful. Then three more hens went broody. See...Here's two of them.

I've had the buff orpington for a couple of years. She was among my first chicken purchase (from Dar!) and she had never been broody...until now. They're only sitting on 2 eggs.

You'll have to put some chicks under her!! 2 is NOT enough!!

I know! Who has some day old chicks? or fertile eggs. I could just put more eggs of my own under them. But if someone has some fertile purebred eggs, maybe I'd consider it. The problem is that they made their nest in a corner of the coop. I don't have room to separate them. Will they fight over the chicks if they only have two?

I had two hens go broody at the same time, and they seemed to be perfectly happy to share the three chicks.

I had two hens that went broody together. Shared the eggs and are now raising 6 chicks together-and all is well. Chicks belong to both and go to either hen and both hens are fine with the arrangement.
I think it depends on the hens, but mine are happy to mother together.

HAPPY FOUR DAY WEEKEND Y'ALL!

I took the whole week off! Cheers!

I'm gonna kick it off with a 3 day light backpack trip. I'm getting dropped off at the top of Mt Lemmon this morning and will be back at my car, in Sabino Canyon, sometime monday. No tent or sleeping bag, just a large day pack.

Have a good one!

Thanks AZKat and AZ_HenHouse! I gave them two more eggs this am. So that's all! No more chicks!

MaddBaggins, that sounds like an awesome trip. I was a river guide for a while, only used a tent if it was raining. I've done some backpacking, too, but always had a sleeping bag! :)

Okay, so I am totally new to candling and wondering when these babies will ever come - just so you know, I did not save eggs at the right temperature and then put them under her all at once. I collected the duck eggs in the morning for 4 days and gave her 1 the first day and 2 each consecutive day. I didn't know any better - first time my silkie had gone broody and my sister wanted ducks so I wanted to give my silkie something to hatch...
Anyway, do you think these eggs look good or bad?
Here are the dates/ages (in no particular order of the photos because I did not mark them and have no idea which ones are which) of the eggs based on the days I gave them to her....counting the day I gave them as the first day.
Egg 1 - day 30
Egg 2&3 - day 29
Egg 4&5 - day 28
Egg 6&7 - day 27

These photos were all shot from above so the eggs are laying in my hands similar to the way they were in the nest.

Nothing has happened with any of them... can they get turned too much? I am asking because she was using the box that my EE girl likes to use and so every day when my EE goes in there, she shares the nest and messes up all the eggs. When she finally gets out, my silkie takes her egg and adds it to her duck eggs and I have to go get it out from under her - so lots of disturbing.

If nothing hatches, any advice on how to get a good hatch next time? Will my silkie be able to sit for another month? I am assuming she will not stop being broody until she actually has babies...

What's the deal with the spot???

This one is weird - light on both ends???
