Arizona Chickens

Wow! Ok I'm on my iPad and its much more difficult than my laptop! Sorry to those I have sent ovations to with add on comments about things, I'm so confused! Haha

That's ok, I think most of us are use to the iPad users having all sorts of issues. Photos not posting, duplicate posts, etc. We're a pretty easy going bunch on here. Besides, ovations can only show up as positive on our accounts, right?!?

anyone from Tucson coming up to phoenix or casa grande anytime soon? there are a few chicks i'd like to get from Desertmarcy, but I really can't justify the trip from north phoenix when I have no intention of seeing the in-laws in oro valley until mid-august.

Does anybody use the superfine mister nozzles from DripWorks?( http://www.dripworks.com/category/misters) I just finished replacing all the nozzle heads and I still am not getting a good mist, and some are just dripping, not misting!

It is too hot out there for this kind of activity! These worked great when I first put this system together, so I can't figure out what is going on.

It is 4:35 PM not one egg, yestorday 1 egg, the day of the move. The day before 2 eggs and 1 cracked egg in the water. Today I have filled their food dish 3 times, greens & tomato's from the garden and a bowl of juicing left overs. [juiced tomato's]. Gave an extra treat of strawberries and blueberries.

I figure a couple of days untill this is their new home. No one has come running to get out. I guess that is good.

are they clogged? I don't know about theirs I don't have misters in my runs

102 this afternoon and while everyone is panting no one looks like they are going to keel over.

Losy my first chicken Friday :( didnt have the misters running early enough. I was home coincidentally with a headache by 2pm and she was gone :(

Will be starting misters earlier 12ish. Hope this helps. Also increased shading.

I feel negligent, but i will fight so it doesnt happen again.

We live in Surprise, Arizona and have 5 chickens that we bought from our local farm store. We got Edmond and Cookie (Rhode Island Red and Barred Rock) first. They were so fun that we got three more. Edmond and Cookie are a little over 2 months old now. The others are a little over a month. They are the fancy kind with the feathers on their head. I believe they are all hens.
We have had so much fun raising them. But we didn't realize how fast they grew and take into account that the weather was going to get hot so fast.
At first we could put them in the yard for a good part of the day. Now we only have about 2 hours a day that they can be outside without dying of a heat stroke. They are panting the second they get out in the yard. We love them very much, but we can't give them a proper home now. They are fantastic friendly chickens. We play with them a lot. My daughter just loves them. I never knew that we would actually care and have feelings for farm animals. They are our pets.
I have been on this site looking up all kinds of issues on raising chickens and it has really helped.
It is upsetting that we have to now find new homes for them. I am really sad and I am afraid that someone will want them for cooking or other bad things.
I could really use some advice as to how I can re-home them. I would like to post them on here because it seems like most off all the people on this site really cares about chickens. Since I am new, I don't qualify to post an ad yet.
I posted them on craigslist so far without a response.

Any help or advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks, Christine

This morning one of my new misters was dripping--it has worked loose, and once I screwed it back in, it worked grandly. The other common issue is calcium buildup. It is not amiss to soak the mister nozzles in CLR every week.

Desert Marcy, I feel your pain. I've been having issues with my misters too. Nothing major. But I get drips/leaking sometimes from the hose connections on either side of the nozzle. So I use zip ties on either side basically as hose clamps to tighten the hose onto the connection. But it's like as soon as I fix one, then a different one will start leaking. I think there's a delicate pressure balance on these things. So I turned the water flow down a little too, and that seemed to help. I also went out with some CLR and a tooth brush and hit all the nozzles/mister heads. Constant maintenance seems to be the name of the game with misters. But at least they're really effective when working right, and even if you have one leaky one the others work.

I'm not using the same system as you though. I got one off of amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005727FU4/ref=oh_details_o07_s01_i02?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It does create a really fine mist, again, when working properly. I wonder if this system will last more than one summer or not though. We'll have to see how it goes. But it's relatively cheap, so I could live with replacing it next year if I have to.

The chickens seem pretty happy with it though. They stay out in the mist all day, hunkered down in the dirt taking dirt baths or resting.

And chickgrl, if you haven't seen all the mister discussion, that would be my recommendation for your coop if you're looking for an evaporative cooling effect. You can get systems for pretty cheap. And you can get hose-timers and run a mister during a window of your choice. But that's going to be the most effective use of your water. Would love to see pics of your set up though! And welcome!
