Arizona Chickens

Uh oh, where on the west side are you? Do I need to keep an eye out for yet another predator? I'm west of the Tucson Mountains, near Bopp/San Joaquin.

I'm not that far west... I saw the raccoon near Camino de Oeste/Speedway area, a couple of miles east of Gates Pass.

i am a total chicken virgin......................

but ive got the bug, coop being built by a tolerant and long suffering city boy husband
i am in Buckeye, and wondered if anyone knows how many chickens youre allowed to have, no HOA, we are RURAL.......next door have horses, the other side has sheep and goats and a ROOSTER that shouts at 3.00am daily,
i could just become a predator for five minutes, really i could but then i go back to sleep and ive forgotten by the time i wake..........meh !

Any advice, commentary, suggestions would be welcomed.

Hi janie welcome byc, I don't know how many chickens you are allowed to have but if you need some chicks I have some Easter eggers hatching on the 14th that I'm selling for 2$ each. Most will lay blue or green eggs and a few may lay pinkish brown eggs.

Texas root rot is a fungal disease, so yes, mycelium is a bad thing if it is the root rot fungal mycelium. I was talking with Mark Dimmitt recently, he is former curator of plants at the Desert Museum, and he said to avoid Texas root rot, don't bring in soil from somewhere else, particularly if it is from old cotton fields, which can be infested with it. Of course some housing developments had fill brought in, don't know about your place. Did your peach tree die really suddenly? That is a hallmark of the disease, as well as the dead leaves stay hanging on the branches.
thanks for your input. i didnt read far enough on the website to learn that mycelium is different types of fungus. what i have is located about 1/2 inch below the top soil, occasionally i see it across the top in between watering. it looks like spider webs and is white. my peach tree didnt die suddenly, it seemed to take 2 months and it looked to be a slow painful death. i've never had a peach tree before and didnt know what to do. over watered - under watered? we had tree watering stakes and the leaves would be either yellow (i assumed from too much h20) but others dried and crumbly (from not enough) planted at the wrong time? (from pot in october, not bare root) one person suggested we covered the graft and it was slowly suffocating.
DH said the pitiful looking leaves fell off the tree. anyway, i stared at that dead tree for 4 months hoping it might show signs of life again, when we pulled it up there was the white spiderweb of moldy fungus on the roots, which i thought was root rot... what i read of texas root rot it is brown. ??
our appraiser told us our yard was fill dirt from when they widened the 60 near our home.
another question - if it is in one part of my yard, is it in ALL my yard? like i said earlier, my fig tree is growing great :)

Best to always call your county planning and zoning to be sure. When I called they said at my address (rural agricultural area with livestock and roosters near), but I was limited to 8 hens and NO roosters. I mentioned the livestock around me and was informed that there are different rules in my area based on the size of your lot. Our lot was 1.02 acres so we had restrictions. I asked what would be my restrictions if we also owned the 1.3 acre lot next door...she said if we also owned that lot our total would be 2.32 acres, well over their minimum of 1.6 acres and therefore I would not have any restrictions here in our ag area.

We ended up buying the lot next door (just closed last day of June) so now I can have lots of chickens, roosters, and even goats! Which I plan to have very soon.

So make sure first because you don't want to get chickens then be sited if they are not allowed at your address.

I still have a few white silkies left for sale. I think they are 5.5 weeks, is that right Mama Hen? Should be of showable quality, but time will tell. They are from Sleepy Hollow Farm in VA.

thank you, much appreciated, we have over 1.5 acres, no option to buy more, so 8 may be it :(, no worries, i will ask, ive spent hours reading this forum this afternoon, what a font of knowlege there is !!!

The splash and not sure black or blue silkies I got from you will be 5 weeks old the end of the week.
Taken on Saturday 7/5.

Okay so Im here to ask a huge favor!!! So we were supposed to have a coop built and delivered for our school chickens. Well the people totally fell through at the last minute so we are now out of a coop. If anyone has any sort of structure that they dont need then we would greatly need it. We have absolutely no money so it makes building one quite a pain. Thanks guys!
