Sent a email asking them consider how vital chickens are.. Our family donates the eggs to families in the military & in need.. They are a vital part of a community.. Hope they understand

Cool! I remember when we were constructing our coop & run in anticipation of getting our chicks. What kind of chickens are your planning to get? Will you start with day-olds, or are you looking for older chickens? We started with 3 week old (because no day olds where available). It actually worked out better because the 3 week olds were already living in an outdoor coop because it was warm enough, so we didn't have to keep them inside under a brooder.

Welcome to BYC!
i am open to advice !
first timers here :) i was thinking heat tolerant 3 or 4 weeks old, able to go out in the run, and forage some, but young enough that i can try and get friendly

Here is what Sarah had as a response..

Hi! Thanks for your comments! I'll take them with me to the city council meeting and bring them up with the Councilmembers. Hopefully they will vote to allow us to get chickens!

I have a mix that all seem to be doing well in the heat (Buff Orpington, Black Australorp, Rhode Island Red, Sex Link, Barred Rock). I got them from someone who hatched them out herself. Her kids help tend to them so they were very use to being handled often. My Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks are the most friendly and don't mind me handling them. The Buffs will come to me so that is nice. If you get them from someone who breeds lots of chickens, they may not be handled often therefore they might be afraid of you. With lots of contact (and treats) they will probably warm up to you in time.

That would be too cool to watch! I think the council members should tour a few backyard chicken keepers to see that they really don't stink and they are not loud. My two small dogs make more mess and noise then all 9 of my chickens.

thanks this is just the kind of advice im looking for :)

I have a bunch of cockerels in my little group of 9 chickens. Perhaps 6...at least 3. These little roos are about 9-10 weeks old. Am I going to hear them crowing soon? I'm around them for about 45 minutes in the early morning, and 1 hour in the evening (and more time during the weekends). I'm worried I'll miss their crowing while I'm at work, and meanwhile, the neighbors are ripping their hair out in annoyance at constant crowing. I really want them to get bigger before freezer time, but I'll process as they begin to crow.

I guess my question is: once a cockerel starts crowing, am I going to know about it?

Glad I could help. If you spend some time browsing around on this forum you are bound to find every possible answer to every possible question, lol. I spent many hours (okay probably more like days) on this board when I was preparing for chicken keeping. Have fun! Chickens are pretty easy to raise and they give you so much entertainment (and eggs) in return.

Be sure to share pics of your coop when you are done...and of course your chickens once you get them :)
