Arizona Chickens

Maybe there is someone here on BYC that will show us all how?

My daughter wants to incubate eggs but I keep putting her off because I don't look forward to dealing with the cockerels.
At least when we get sexed chicks we don't get many.

I don't think I could kill my chickens. Not sure my boyfriend would be able to either, though I know he wants to learn survival traits and would like to be able to do it I just don't know if he could. I've never killed anything bigger than a spider. When I was a teenager I brought my hamster to the vet to have it put to sleep because it was sick and I couldn't kill it myself. They looked at me like I was nuts. I guess I'd have to find a butcher if I needed to kill one of my girls.

I was getting too anxious for my chicks to get old enough to lay, so I got a hen that was already laying. I love having a daily egg, and look forward to lots of daily eggs in about 5-9 weeks from now.

Sorry about all the cockerels :(

Where did you get the laying age hen? If you don't mind...

i need some help by someone that knows about chicken anatomy. I lost my pure little Powder yesterday. Not sure of the time of death. At 14:00 I opened her, removing the Brest plat and skin to see organs in place. The liver was large but not exsisive, color washed out, I assume that this was do to being refrigerated. Intestines were, I am sure, functioning will. However, the heart was in a sack of water/fluid. When I have butchered wild game, I scooped in interals out. If there was a water sack around the heart, I have never seen one. In human the heart surrounded by water is not a good thing! Is this a sign of heat stroke? She had one small egg about 2 finger widths from vent fully formed. There was 1 egg yoke started. I stopped here. I did not believe I would learn anything from the eggs. I have no idea about the lungs, they were pink and wet. Possibly they had water in them, I did not expect them to be so moist.

Question, did she die of the heat, or was she sick and the heat finished her?

I am sorry to hear Powder is gone.

Wow, sounds like a pretty skillful autopsy.

Found some banty day (or so) old chicks last week for my broody. Gave them to her on Thursday night and she took right to them. I was leaving for a trip early Friday morning and just got back today and happy to see the momma and babies doing great. Didn't realize how well they blend in with the straw. lol
That is such a great thing isn't it?? It makes such a blessing to hava a good momma take over.. Now I wish the hens would share them with me!

We are super lucky with this momma, she is great about letting us play with the babies. She brings them over to us to see if I have any treats and doesn't mind kids picking them or her up ( she is little and fluffy and kids are drawn to her). A real laid back momma.
I was worried because she was a co momma with our standard cochin and those boogers are 9 weeks old and we still haven't been able to catch them. The cochin instilled a fear of humans in them

. She would growl and puff up anytime we got near them and always made them hide behind her. If we happen to catch on (on the roost in the middle of the night maybe) they are sooo funny, you touch it and they squeak like a chew toy. My daughters job right now is to socialize them to people so they don't have a heart attack every time we go into the run. Not sure that cochin will be allowed to raise anymore.
