Arizona Chickens

Can someone explain the squatting/bowing situation? I assumed it was just the pullet being uncomfortable with a big ol egg in there moving down. Reading has suggested its a mating/submission move? Any facts?

I don't know what the feed stores stock since I don't buy from them, but are you sure you want to raise Cornish X? I raised them once and said never again. They are quite disgusting chickens, IMHO, all they do is sit, eat, drink and poop. They grow like crazy and can have leg problems such that they can't walk. They also do not take the heat well at all, so if you are insistent on raising them for meat, do it in the winter or late fall. I got my chicks end of Feb. and by the beginning of May, they were all butchered. The heritage meat birds (not hatchery, they are not big enough) take longer to grow out to butcher size but they taste infinitely better. By buying Cornish cross, you are perpetuating the industry of "frankenbirds". Just my opinion!!
Well...the main reason I was thinking about CX is that I don't have the room to raise heritage chickens for meat. I've got an area where I can plunk down a 4x4 tractor/pen for 6-8 CX. I'll have to look into the industry of producing cornish crosses...from the almost nothing that I know, I'm not at this point opposed to perpetuating frankenbirds. I'm definitely not disagreeing the heritage chickens are better in every way, but in my ignorance, I think there's a place for animals like cornish crosses.

Lightning, thunder and rain in Gilbert last night/early morning. I got woken up by one of the big bangs. Good times!

That storm swept past Tucson with nary a drop. Usually I'd be upset, but last night the whole family went to the Willie Nelson concert (outside venue) and it was probably the only time I've ever been glad there wasn't a storm! We did see some lightning, and the winds sure did cool us off.

Hmmm, sounds like Oro Valley isn't the area I'm interested in! I was looking in the NE, or NW areas too. We want at least 1/2 acre, and want our chickens, no HOA. :)

It's still 5 years down the road. We'll be visiting next summer to check things out. Any opinions as far as West vs. East Tucson? We can only have 6 now, but we probably would not get more than 12 when the time comes. (I can hear some snickering, lol)

Thank you!

Wow Tucson changes so fast - it will be hard to tell - look into the Vail area. Its not right in the thick of things like Oro Valley but think about it.

BTW - only wind here in the Casa Grande/Eloy area - the usual 14 drops to mess up the windshield but other - zero. BUT temp is well on its way to 105+! Misters are on

I'm sure you can find somewhere in Oro Valley that will meet your requirements...it is a nice upscale community, and definitely a place that is attractive to retirees for a variety of reasons. You'll just have to look around! I'm totally partial to the westside of Tucson...the eastside is some foreign far off land as far as I'm concerned....but either way, there are beautiful areas to live in on both sides of town. Both the city and county allow chickens (in most cases).

Haha Dephane! You and I have the same thoughts!

My Marans are late hatchers. This is the fifth hatch with them and they tend to take longer. Any thoughts? Maybe a breed trait? The bantams were the first to hatch and boy are they hyper.

Im already looking at more eggs. Hatching is so addictive! This time maybe lav orphingtons, wellsummers and yokohamas? Saw a breeder for cuckoo silkies too.[/quot

I like your idea of the coop on wheels... The silkie from you is she a blue?
Glad you mentioned having a milk carton for possessing day.. I will put that on my list

Hi everyone,

I plan to retire in and around Tucson, AZ. And one thing we have to be able to have is our chickens! I have zoning info for Tucson, but can't seem to be able to find the regulations for having chickens in residential areas of Oro Valley. (R136) I thought I'd ask here. Thanks in advance~

Awesome you will love Tucson ... There are lots of tucson folk here.. Not sure of the regulations.. Let us know when you get to Arizona &
what kind of chickens you will get...

Miss Gallo, where are you??? Also your photos..
