Arizona Chickens

I've been letting the girls out almost everyday lately. Only when I'm home, though. They really love wandering around and I've found multiple spots where they've dug out to bask it or cool off in depending on location.
I keep asking them not to crap on the patio, but they don't listen very well.

Yup, seems to the preferential dumping ground for my clan, too! I think of it as using Charmin Ultra Strong on the cement, as opposed to Charmin Ultra Soft in the grass. I prefer Ultra Strong, too... No pasty butts this way. Not even for me.

It seems that the heating element has a lot of benefits. At night no peeping, they sleep. The light dose not keep them a wake. I used a 250w heat light before, now the heat is 150w and seems more heat. Putting the heat further away works to. I am having problems finding a 3 stage light socket, I am going to have to go to an electrical supply store after the Holiday.

In my experience, the only way to keep chickens off the patio is to fence off the patio. Ours has a 3 foot 'fence" running around it, with the bottom half of a dutch door to provide a gate. I like the way that it looks, and partially enclosing the patio has turned it into indoor/outdoor living space, which I really enjoy. Next step is to get some ceiling fans outside, so that its usable during the hotter parts of the year, and turning part of it into an aquaponics area.

So i have another gardening question:I have sweet corn starting to grow and i keep finding that it falls over and breaks the bottom of the stem! I dont know if i should stake them or what

I need some info and suggestions. I have my fermented feed in the house, just moved to laundry room. My house in general is about 85 degrees, my garage is much higher. My bedroom area is about 75-78 degrees. I read that the temp for the feed is 60-70 degrees. To hot kills it. Am I right so far?

My problem is my clothing picks up the smell. Can I safely put it in the garage? Or keep mega Fabreze? There has been complaints that I stink as well, (reports from my sister and supper noises). Now I work out side and sweat ALOT, I do smell, so before I leave I try to shower. I shower a lot, my skin. Itches from it, so when I do not go out I shower only once. I think a large part if the feed. Any suggestions? My nephew suggested I put in the guest bath tub and turn on the exhaust fan. 2 problems, the sound of the fan stresses me... Don't know why it just dose. And it is a guest bath room, I am always dreaming of friends and having people over. On the other hand it would be cooler...... :barnie

I have been using this, it is great, my peeps sleep all night. I have a 150W, have problems with it being to hot, I mentioned it before. When the time comes they will have no problem adjusting because no heat lamp.

Never heard of that... Except in strong winds. Az (and other places) has mountains, valleys and flat land, I do not remember details about the result is shear winds, or straight line winds. They act funny do to the heat off the land. Mostly at times of rain storms. I get them were I am. They snapped my out door Umbrella, instead of taking off it slammed into my house. Check shear winds out.

I appreciate all of your knowledge, DEMOS! I'm a little different with my flock. My chickens are not pets. That's not to say that I don't care for them any less, I just TRY to avoid emotional attachment to them. If no one was able to take her, I would do the necessary treatment myself. I worm, dust, even will do bumble foot surgery for my girls. I need to downsize my flock anyway, so this is good. I know City will take wonderful care of her!

About the kids, yes, more equals more stress, but also a more fulfilling life, IMO. Peoole think we're crazy having 6 children so close together. That's their opinion, and that's ok. I absoultely LOVE it and I wouldn't change a thing at this point. It's actually a bit easier right now, the older siblings help out quite a bit. They love holding the baby and they are learning so much about responsibility! We have a very small house and they all share a bathroom. (I TRY to keep them out of mine! ;) )No fighting, but then again my oldest 3 are boys. It probably would be different with girls! Eeesh! Stop by sometime if you're ever on the East Side and we'll talk everything chicken and kids!

I'm right there with you on them not being pets.  And even though my wife initially agreed, she's changed her tune some.  Her Silkies are not eligible for Camp Freezer, ever.  And even though the three turkeys are named Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, she'd keep at least one of them (probably Easter) permanently if she could.  They are the broad breasted variety, so that's not possible.  I hope to get one or two heritage Bronze later this fall or early spring.  I'd love to get a mating pair so that we can have fertilized eggs from them, too.

I'd love to be able to come chat and socialize sometime.  My wife and I are needed to build more friends and get out more.  We have one set of friends that are over at least once or twice a month, but our conflicting schedules make it so hard.  One of our neighbors is great, but we rarely have the opportunity to get together.  But a healthy marital relationship needs more outside interaction than we have at the moment.  I'll PM you and we can work something out.  You're more than welcome out to our place, too.  If you look through my pics, you can see the playground we have in the backyard, plus a tetherball pole and a pool, so we are very kid-friendly.  City Farm and her boys had a blast last time they came over.  Even she got out there playing a game of tetherball.  Oh, the memories it brings back from my childhood when we had real playground equipment at school...

Oh man that was a blast !!! I was sore from winning against my teenagers.. Ha! They said I cheated.. I say give an old lay a chance to
cheat.. Nawww.. However they figured out my moves and then won...is grabbing the ball for a milisecond count??
