Arizona Chickens

I am thinking maybe not this time. BS Turkeys are a heritage breed and usually take longer to fill out. I myself have 2 Rio Grande Tom and Hen. I got them around easter time and they do get large but in no way 12 pounds as of now. But I may be wrong. I feed Turkey Grower along with the rest of the mix (yogurt, italian food, mixed greens and other bugs.) I am by no means a master Turkey dude, just learning here on this site and other ranchers in the area. Check with the turkey pages here in BYC. Plenty of folks are large flock turkey people who can help you as well.

I lost my favorite chicken to a coyote. It really sucks. It got my little white crested polish hen T.T. (as in Tina Turner) Now Elvis is so lonely. I have other chickens that he gets along with for the most part but I can tell he would like one of his own kind to hang with. I felt so bad when I lost T.T. I had to keep telling myself it's just a chicken. Well the truth is that my husband kept reminding me. He is not nearly attached as I am. He finds himself amused in the mornings when they are deciding their pecking order for the day but he would never admit it.
I am going to start looking for a female soon but I would like to find one that is close in age if possible. If anyone knows someone in the Phoenix, Peoria, Surprise area that maybe breeds, white crested black polish please drop me a line. I would rather go that route than to have to get another baby.
I do hope you have better luck with the rest of your feathered friends. The predators do present a challenge.

Oh so sorry for your bird, condolences from us.. We just gave that chicken to our friends that lost some of theirs..
If they change their mind I will let you know..

Was out watching them this evening and watched this little boy start towards one of the older hens but she just turned her head towards him and he backed up and went the other way. Still making the smaller girls shriek however. HOpefully he gets the hang of things....

I have this with a young, very beautiful RIR who beats up the younger EEs but the girls with "more experience" just give him the what for and chase him away. If they see him coming for the younger EEs they'll turn and chase him away too!! Makes me laugh out loud!. My neighbors don't appreciate his crow so I've been trying to get him to a school or 4H project just because he's such a beautiful bird. If it doesn't happen soon I'll have to send him to camp freezer.

I have 2 very large New Hampshire Red hens, and 1 smaller RIR. She is very friendly but I thought she was a he till she laid an egg. She is pretty Butch lookin' for a hen. but she likes her neck scratch at bed time. LOL 3 of my chickens like to be tucked in and necks scratched when I check on them in the evening as the sun sets before I lock them in for the night. I am living out in the desert. I have neighbors but they have a loud jack a** that is always making a LOUD

my garden is coming along, I planted more today, a lot ofonions, I have to pick up a some garlic. Onion and garlic take so long to grow. I planted more black eye peas for their nitrogen.

As for keeping my girls out of my garden, I used last year that orange temp fencing. I bought on E-bay 1/2 bird netting. I have 3 beds secured from my girls. I figure I can roll up the sides when I need them to go to work cleaning out the beds and scratching the soil. I wish the loved to eat ants. I want to poison them, but I worry about my bees.

All the new girls. (For Angle, Dakota, and Basil she/he)

I should have done more work on my garden today but I was lazy. The heat is still getting me down.
Good job on your garden.

At the moment I am only in the garden a few hrs at most a day.

I have a question, IS THERE A MALE/ROOSTER chick personality????

Basil is noisy and refuses to become tame.... Sort of. Will not stand for being held...

I haven't been on here in a while, but thought I would share an experience. About a month ago, I purchased the brand America's Choice large flake pine shavings. Four bags. I opened one and put it in the brooder. I clean it out completely once a week. Today I did the same, picked up a lavender silkie and noticed it was COVERED in mites. Mind you, these chicks have been in my dining room since hatch. Checked the other few chicks, COVERED!!!!!!!!!!!! Eww. Went outside and looked in the bag, mites crawling around in the shavings. Double EWWWWW! Went and bought teramigo, cleaned the brooder for the second time today, doused the chicks with eprinex and put some poultry dust in with the teramigo. The opened bag went in the dumpster and the three unopened bags will be going back to the feed store tomorrow for a refund. Plus a phone call to the company. A friend of a friend had this SAME thing happen two weeks ago.

Does anyone here ferment their milk and drink kefir? I'm interested in getting a sample or some kefir cultures to try. It was mentioned to me tonight by the lady we get our raw milk from. Apparently, the pre-digestion by the bacteria makes it a lot more tolerant for people who have sensitivities. I'm thinking about trying it, but don't particularly want to spend $25 for her to hate it.

I have had some from Sprouts and rather enjoyed it. It was a nice, thick consistency, or a running yogurt. If I add a touch of homemade flavoring, I think she'd devour it.

Thanks in advance...

Yuck! And I would demand they pay for the treatment, too. That's horrible!
