Arizona Chickens

I put two Rubbermaid containers in the ground to compost in. I drilled holes in the bottom for drainage. It works great and I can keep it moist easier than when I used above ground containers.

Does anybody else NOT ferment feed? I tried it and really didn't like it (and neither did my girls), but whenever it is brought up I feel like I am missing the party, lol! Everybody seems to love it.

Lkd, what a pain! I hate the patdown at concerts. Same thing at wllie nelson, and yeah, at 37 i was one of the youngest there!

I do fermented feed. My chickens like it, but don't mob me like others claim. It takes them all day to finish a dish.

Meh, I fed fermented feed for about 9 months. They liked it enough, but they didn't exhibit that much more enthusiasm than they did for wet feed. I decided that it was too much to ask the house sitter to deal with when we would go out of town so we stopped. They don't seem to miss it.

Good idea to keep your compost moist!

I do not believe I will be attending very many more concerts unless Elvis, Bob Marley, and James Brown are appearing on stage live. I will be naked going in.

Yes, ZZ TOP WAS GREAT........
When that happens, I'll be right there with you! I saw James Brown a few times over the years, he was awesome. I was too young to catch Elvis and missed Bob.

I didn't want to be the one to suggest it might eventually crow. I had fantastic luck on my first batch, 9 for 9 pullets (straight run). All the other batches were about 50:50, even though it always seemed like there were more roos.

Now that the summer has ended and fall has begun, I decided to visit Phoenix in the venue of the Az State Fair. Bonnie and I "bought" ticket to see ZZ TOPS. Volumn was heart throbbing but the show was fun! However tthe EXPERIENCE resulted in a letter to the Editor as below :

If you go to the Arizona State Fair you will see that ranchers are raising Angus Beef, hobby farmers are raising goats and rabbits and wonderful garden produce. Home crafters still make wearable and decorative items from fiber, wood and even recycled plastics but these are minor in comparison to those mass produced products that we use in our daily life. If you read the labels in your clothing including footwear, you will see that most of the items are assembled in China or elsewhere in southeastern Asia. USA does not produce many goods these days. And with the proposed secretive Transpacific Pact our food will be shipped overseas to be processed and then returned here for resale. You may be aware that there is a movement in this country to grow unadulterated chemical free food because people are beginning to realize how far corporate agriculture has deviated from nature.

While visiting the fair it is impossible to buy anything but ersatz grease food from the vendors while the carnival atmosphere distracts all senses with the noise. And then there were the thousands of middle age people, including myself, who had the idea to escape to another time by buying tickets to a vintage rock and roll concert. We paid for parking, entrance to the fair and another fee for seats down in the front. But wait ther is more ! Because we were required to stand in line until after the band began to play in order to be frisked by security because after all there just might be a INTERNATIONAL THREAT in these citizens and tax payers. I ask you, "What was a 68 year old woman planning to do with her finger nail file that the security team confiscated from her ? And I ask you, "What have we done when we allowed our country to become so internally terrorized that we need to be frisked when entering a vintage rock and roll concert at the Arizona State Fair ?

Just think of how much broth, stock and canned chicken you can make out of them! Yeah, yeah, doesn't help with the eggs, though.
Sometimes Ya just gotta think positive. When I first started raising chickens, I ordered 25 chicks staight run from McMurray. 20 roosters and 6 hens is what they sent

That was almost 18 years ago. I have learned a lot since then !

Great letter!!! Totally agree...The Fairs are simply not what they used to be...and neither is our country it would seem

So sorry you had to let them go but hopefully they found a wonderful new home. Since the day I got chickens I've been so paranoid about biosecurity. Reading stories like yours make me even more so. I've already decided I won't add started pullets to my flock, only chicks that are brooded in the garage. I want to go to the state fair to see the poultry this weekend but am afraid of bringing something home on my shoes etc. I am afraid to have visitors that have chickens over to my house or to go to theirs. Between mycoplasma, marek's and all the other scary flock killing things it's almost like I want to put my chickens in big hamster balls.

You can go to the fair. I have been many times. Make sure when you get home, you wash up and change your clothes and shoes. You should always wear/have "chicken" shoes. I have my crocs that I wear only in my backyard. This also goes when you go to the feed store.

As for your chicken friends, require the same. On the Tour de Coops,  you must step on a mat with disinfectant before going into see the coops.  This year they have 30 coops to visit.

When I visit my chicken friends, I wear their "chicken" shoes. do not wear your "chicken" clothes when going to their house. Just make sure you always wash your hands.

It is so hard to do that. Our neighbors A few doors down have chickens.
Plus I am always going to my dearsest friends house.. I have to say I do have
chicken shoes just for our run.. Not for bio security, just for bio poo... :celebrate

We just started the F.F. So far they loved it. I like it because of less waste..
The Feed from the co-op is like flower so I am going to get the most out of it..
Plus the nutrients are better..
