we have a terrible colony of tiny red ants in/under/near a pile of pavers against the north wall that we can not get rid of! i am worried about my kids being bit. they bite the chickens all the time because there is a nice patch of grass over there. i will try the amdro, buts its near my compost bins - will that contaminate my compost? what harm could it do?

we killed a big fat mouse, or a small rat in the yard today. i noticed something was gnawing the corners on my rubbermaid patio bench a few days ago but was in denial cuz i really didnt want a rodent problem. then i noticed the corners of my husbands rubbermaid shed were getting chewed on so i told him about it and then he moved it and out blasted the critter. we trapped him between the coop and block wall and *ahem... that was the end of him. but eww gross, and i have a Rat Terrier! good for nothing fat spoiled dog!!

I got some Doobie Brothers, Blood,Sweat & Tears, Guess Who, British Invasion stuff, and possibly the Beatle's 1st and 2nd LP's, and a host of Motown, Jazz, Blues, Big Band and Gospel and an extensive Classical collection. If you happen to be in the neighborhood and like to noodle with a keyboard, stop by and play my piano. Oh, and bring your best brew. --BB

City Farm, this is just one of my hobbies. I got frustrateed when no one in town knew how to repair these things, so I've spent years and years talking to old retired techs on the internet, so now I repair these things myself. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and can read schematics fairly well. I like repairing these things and give them away to friends and co-workers, occasionally charging about $20 bucks for a new cartridge/needle. --BB

Hey there!
My chicks will be 4 weeks on Tuesday and this weekend we let them in the coop and run during the day and took them back to the brooder box at night. Next weekend they will start being in the coop full time. I have sand in the run, sand under the roosting bars inside. I bought one of those small prefab coops like they sell at mypetchicken. I thought I read somewhere not to give them access to the nesting boxes until they are closer to laying age? Do y'all agree with that? Is that so they will know when the time comes the purpose of those? I am planning to line them with straw (which I don't have yet) but I don't necessarily want them sleeping in there, or worse yet pooping in there for months until they are ready to start laying. Should I just put a cardboard barrier between the inside of the coop and the boxes for now?

Mine weren't interested in it until they were laying. I didn't put nesting material in them until they were ready, but I didn't have to block access. I would leave it unless you have a problem.

a few bird pictures An older hen, my Cream Brabanter This silly thing is having a hard time with the cold weather. A tenny, tiny, frizzle Naked Neck This is Sissy. I noticed that she was lethargic and not eating or drinking two days ago. Since I saw no infestation or injury or even feather damage, I forced her beak open and fed her some yogurt mixed with apple cider, kept her inside one night and fed her more today including watered down apple cider and she is back on her perch tonight acting normal. Almost forgot I cleaned a little bit of gunk from her nostrils. Another silly frizzle.
Sissy is beautiful!

Alright, we're halfway done with processing the four roosters that I picked up a few days ago and it's been quite difficult. They have a very large amount of fat on them, and I've come to find that skinning a fat chicken is far more tasking than a properly lean chicken. Nothing peels off correctly, it takes more effort to cut through and severe the neck artery and the organs are tougher to pull out. The third one is bleeding out right now and we'll finish off the last one right afterwards. Oh, and the roosters definitely know it's time to die. They are screeching and doing their best to avoid my hands. Yup, they definitely know.

A buddy of mine was supposed to come help, but he supposedly couldn't find a babysitter and he knew couldn't handle it all. Heck, he said he wasn't sure he could handle it all. The ultimate city-boy from Los Angeles County who can't even gut a store bought fish. Maybe next time.

My 18 month old daughter, however, seems to have a general idea of what is going on. When I hung the first three upside, she waved and said bye bye. As they each bled out, she wanted to be held and had an unusual sadness to her. But then, once it's time to finish processing, it's an endless "What dat?" LoL. That, my dear, is chicken. The favorite dish of the house. Of course, her answer to chicken is always "Eat!"

My husband's favorite chicken is not doing well. She is lethargic and not eating much...losing weight. The last time this happened to another chicken the chicken had eaten a screw that had punctured it's intestine. :( I've checked her all over and can't find anything wrong other than her weight is way down and her comb is limp.
She wouldn't eat egg or yogurt but ate a couple of grubs when I found them for her. I'm off to the store to get meal worms but I don't have much hope for her. She is a 3 year old leghorn that use to follow my husband around all the time. We use to have a mealworm colony but the ants got it. I get so tired of the ants!

I always think about your poor bird that ate the screw every time I see something hazardous like it in the yard. Is this one showing any improvement?
