Arizona Chickens

Demosthine, congrats on finishing your roos.

flower, your birds are so pretty!

Gallo, you asked about the soiling drying out in my little roof top planter--yeah, the soil level is only 7" and it gets afternoon sun. But it was covered with shade cloth throughout the summer. I also filled it with a big bag of soil from Costco. I think it was Miracle Grow Moisture Control? I don't usually buy soil like that (that being Miracle Grow), but the stuff didn't dry out once this summer. I didn't even have to water every day.

I did read something somewhere asking for anyone interested in showing off their coop to sign up at the Food Co-op? For Tucson. I would love to show off my coop, but there's tight parking on my cul-de-sac, and my husband is too paranoid we'll be cited. Chickens are legal, our coop needs a permit. If I had a million eyes I'd be rolling them all, but he works in permitting so it's a big deal to him.

The polymer crystals in that stuff really helps (at first anyway).

I've been thinking that we should have a special AZ Coop page or thread where we could have virtual tours to share. It would be great to have a bunch of AZ coops in one easily accessible spot which would be especially helpful to new people planning their coops. Would anyone be interested?

Oh yeah, I'm sure the soil will be dry and useless after this winter. That's what compost is for!

Sure, yes, I'd post in an AZ Coop page.

Something "crazy" is happening in the my little flock. The personality-lacking, timid as ever, black copper marans actually fought to be first in line for the morning treats, and squawked/chest bumped at one of the bratty, bossy, barred rocks. Whoa! Usually she first side-eyes the treats, wanders over, pretends not to be interested until she's sure no one is looking, and then timidly, maybe, reaches in to quickly snatch one up and scoot away. She's never challenged anyone, at least that I've seen. Kinda cool. She squatted for my daughter the other day, so I guess it's a hormone thing. Maybe I'll get an egg from her soon as well. Maybe with the new found gumption, she'll start to grow on me...otherwise she's first in line to be replaced.

LOL! If I were him I'd be paranoid too. Ignorance of the rules is not supposed to be an excuse but it often affects the direction of enforcement. No way could he claim ignorance. Things would not go well if y'all got caught.

You can show off your coop here with photos and we promise we won't come park in your cul-de-sac.

I got some Doobie Brothers, Blood,Sweat & Tears, Guess Who, British Invasion stuff, and possibly the Beatle's 1st and 2nd LP's, and a host of Motown, Jazz, Blues, Big Band and Gospel and an extensive Classical collection. If you happen to be in the neighborhood and like to noodle with a keyboard, stop by and play my piano. Oh, and bring your best brew. --BB

Beautiful piano! I don't play but 2 of my daughters do. :)

No. She won't eat anything but a few bugs and she is very weak.
The BSL that had been lethargic for a while died a few weeks ago and she had a tumor. I don't know what's up with this one. I guess this stuff happens as hens get older.
The bummer is for the past 4 years I have gotten chicks in the Fall(September) but this year I figured I already had too many chickens so I didn't get any.

Good idea. I'm in. Would it be all of AZ or just the desert coops? I always direct newbies to "my coop" pictures if they ask, but to have a bunch in one place especially suited to our warm weather would be great.

 :weee Finally an egg.
400
it is small ,but I finally got another laying pullet. I' sure it was Tipsy. For all most an hour she was making a lot of noise, her chatter was all over the place. Most of it from the coop. Then she would come out cluck some more then run back to the coop. I am looking forward for more eggs.
