Arizona Chickens

welcome-byc.gif

Glad to have you aboard...
If the chickens are picking on eachother & having blood or feathers missing, they need more room..
They have to be able to flee to safety..

This is exactly what I'm looking for....what are the dimensions for that dog kennel, especially the height? Since I'm vertically challenged, about 5'8", I can deal with a 5-foot tall structure, maybe 12x12 or 15x15. That way, the nasty HOA can't see over my wall. --BB

Thanks City Farm! That's why we went ahead and separated them. We had 12 of them in a 5x15 coop, but decided to put the older 9 in a 10x10 coop and keep the littles in the smaller coop.

The kennel I have is 10x10 and 6' high. We got it at lowes, originally for the dogs, but then my husband built them a bigger one. So we turned this one into a coop.

Yeah, I did wish they would all just get along.. You did do the right thing by separating them if you thought they would harm beyond just a " put them in their place peck" we have one that was a gift from redrocketrooster.. She is always getting pecked by most of the others.. She is so sweet I could not give her away. She had a hard time adjusting & as soon as she realizes I am there she comes running to get by my feet.. She is supposedly a show silkie. She is very beautiful & I don't show, so that does not matter to us.. We just love her.. she is a kitty.. :love All thought is is much easier to have them all together & if they would play nice & not give you the extra work.. Everyone has a totally different set up.. We love to see photos.. I have been taking photos..BUT, It is to much work & time for us to put on the iPad. So thank you for posting your photos.. I hope they will get along. Oh, our 2nd flock took like 6 months to finally accept eachother.. :barnie

Is the 5x15 an open "run" too or does it have some space that is wind/sun protected? Do the birds free range or do they spend all their time in there?

I like the dog run, but would add a "coop" space that is more protected. We don't get super cold here, but we do go below freezing occasionally. They need a spot that is protected from the elements.

The smaller coop does have a "house" area. They don't free range because of the dogs. We've already lost a few to the dogs, so we extra-fortified the coop. :(

Ugh , my Houdini chickens are at it again. This morning, one of my Ameracaunas got out and I found her in the front yard. My Mom and I chased her four houses down when she jumped the fence. By the time they answered their door, we couldn't find her in the yard of any of the eight houses on the block. I gave up, figuring a dog got her. **** chickens, flyin' the coop.

About three hours later, my wife mentioned another chicken got out and was wandering the backyard. I went out and it was one of my two grays. I was putting her back in the run when the second gray wandered out of the coop! The freelancer came home!!! Woohoo!

I am not sure I am posting in the right place... I need some advice on BYCs in Mesa, AZ in an HOA... HOA says no, city says yes... Anyone have any experience with Sierra Ranch ll ?
HOA covenants and rules win. City allows, but does not grant a RIGHT; HOA covenants are a private contract between the association and each homeowner.

Sounds as if your chickens are causing as much trouble as you children.

Gallo, if you click on the pic to expand it, just to the right of her brown spot I call the ear (remember I am a newb), there is a raised red bump. It is apparent on both sides of her head. I never saw this with my other chicks. Does she just have a different coloring? The other chicks have no redness to their faces whatsoever.
looks like the earlobe is starting to develop

I have been watching your posts

I will probably grow a few out next year, but I don't want to do as many as this year. I want to raise a few more hens of some of the breeds I have, and of course there will be extra toms along the way. Not being able to grow them in big fields of forage, like other parts of the country has, makes growing turkeys here very expensive.

Do you mind posting up your web site again..possibly we could or if someone is taking a trip that way, do a carpool ??
I think it was in May this year I asked about carpooling. I had no reply. I could not come up with the price so it turned into a non option. However next years is a different story. I will be starting a turkey savings for 2014. Before I comit myself I like to have the money in hand. Something always comes up. Murphy is a very active fellow.

Right? Well for one thing I checked over my youngest girls yesterday. And yes, my Black Cooper Marrans is a cockerel, no question. Basil screamed I'm here from the minutiae to got out of the egg. I talked about it on his first day. It was sugested he would be a lot of fun with such a character. If I could have Roos, that would be true. So...........
I have 1 Black Cooper Marans, non-hatchery chick hatched Aug. 29th looking for a new home, I think he will be a handsome guy, and randy cockerel.
