Howdy Peepers!

Breed question for all Y'all.

Background:

The peepers are around 9 weeks old. Due to inheriting a bunch from my neighbor (we initially split the order so they were pseudo siblings anyway) I have Buff orps and Rhode Island Reds. When we initially split the order the peepers were marked from Ideal and she took the 2 RIR's and I the 3 buff orps.

As they grew, my orps exhibited different characteristics - Two of their combs came in red in the second week & they were quite friendly. The third stayed neutral colored and didn't want anything to do with humans.

Now I have all 5 running around together and her two RIR's look like the buff orp with the neutral comb. I think we got them mixed up from the get go. I thought from their size (the red combed ones are bigger than the neutral ones) that the ones with the red combs were Buff Orps as they are supposed to be larger than the RIR's

Question:
Do RIR's combs typically redden quite early? If so I have the friendliest RIR's and the least friendly Buff Orps (which would be typical for any birds in my flock anyway) know to mankind.

Hope ya'll had a merry Christmas!

Mikey

I am certainly no expert but I have 4 RIR's that came from Pratt's. They are 14 weeks, super dark red feathering in the past few weeks, but combs are still quite blonde. At times their facial tissue can be quite red and I even thought at one point they had a rash or infection but that was confirmed as negative after seeing pics of other RIR's same age.
The BO's are a larger breed. I would think their feathering would be significantly lighter. I just posted new pics of my girls a couple pages back.

Quote: The colors are almost identical. I thought there was a tad bit of difference in the top of their tails. (saddles?)

My continued musing on this has led me to think that maybe the RIR's grow faster, just not as big. Maybe (and this is several maybe's now) because they are mainly used for eggs, they're bred to grow to production maturity more quickly. Maybe? Maybe?

Pictures tomorrow morning...

Well, that's another possibility I hadn't thought of. We also got two Buff Orp roos as well. I figured they were the really dark ones (as they were also marked). Maybe the birds I thought were roos were really the RIR's and all the buff colored ones are the Buff orps.

Crapula! If that's the case, I've been handling, cuddling, taming the roos and Pastry is going to KILL ME!!!

My 14 week old RIR's I was saying how light their combs are but they are also almost non-existent. No one has grown even the slightest comb yet. Hope that helps. Did you go see my pics? My girls are super dark red. I hope you get it figured out! In my family I had to mark the chickens with a sharpie cause hubby couldn't tell them apart anymore.

I have a Polish rooster that I just can not keep and would rather not make soup out of him. After all he was once my baby :-(

He was once my favorite chicken. I hand raised him but somewhere along the line his hormones changed him into a Ninja jumping attack rooster. LOL It was funny at firs but it is no longer funny. He just will not stop. He attacks anything that walks past him and he stressed my hens out so bad that they just quit laying eggs so this guy must go. He is a pretty fella but I need peaceful roosters here. My grand children are around the chickens to much to allow this guy to run free. I hate caging him up so I am looking for someone that might want to give him a home. If you like sparing with your chicken then this is the guy for you. My husband has had a lot of fun playing ninja chicken with him when we realized he just would not stop.
I will try to get some better pictures of him.
I am in Surprise Arizona and am willing to give him away free if someone out there would be interested in rescuing this lovely rooster from the pot.

Announcing, the return of the BYC Arizona thread seed box! I started this along with BYC member, constance about two years ago. We put in all of our extra seed packets, packets that were expired and seeds collected from plants that we grew. It started with a few hundred packets of seeds. The idea was to promote gardening in AZ and to share seeds from plants we found to do well in our climate and to promote interactions among our community. The only requirement in getting the seed box is that you have to help get it to the next person. You can take what you want/need and add whatever you can, no one will know. It zig-zagged across the state and finally made it back home to me. I was disappointed that there weren't any seeds in it beyond what I sent, but I was thrilled that so many people out there planted seeds from plants that I grew. It was great hearing from some of you. It was also fun to follow it's journey from member to member. I think it was a success and I think we should give it another go. Start collecting your seeds! This time I hope everyone that gets the box signs it with their BYC username. Squeekyballs drew the rooster and the box art was done by azpenguin. Laree even signed the BYC sticker.
While I was sick my girls Destroyed one bed and took care of my lettuce in another. I have Kentucky string been seeds o have to collect, I am letting a couple of my zuccine squash go to seeds. My tomato's have self planted and I have tons of yellow chary tomato's, I hope to get seeds from them. Don't know how but that never stopped me. And I hope to get a few more seeds. I can mail them to you next month what I have at this point. I also have a few extra seed packets. They are yours. Oh I have red okra also.

I read some ware ware some one had an attack rooster. So she would ( and everyone around him did the same). She would capture him, hold his wings in tight, for the kids they warped him up like swaddling a baby, then tuck him up side own on his back under their arms with his head facing back. :/ :D

I know, out of per portion and all that suff, it is only a quick sketch to illustrate the carry in a straight jacket. I figure Velcro would work for a quick closure by a very unhappy rooster. It said that after a while it avoided confrontation with people. But if he forgets and story's to assert himself it is easy for a reminder. When you put him down to release him be sure he knows YOU are releasing him, not he has won. Apparently it dose make them upset, very un dignified for the cock of the walk. PS. No idea if it works.

Hmmm I could give it a try but that doesn't save my hens from being attacked by him. He is just horrible to them. My poor Americana has been so tramatized she still is not laying yet. The others are back to themselves but she is still running scared even from me. She is starting to warm up again but the last time I caught him chasing her I found her in a corner of her coupe shaking and in shock. It took a while for her to snap out of it. I had no idea roosters could be so brutal. I thought they were starting to molt. I didn't realize the rooster was ripping their feathers out when he jumped them. Little ****. I just don't know what to do with him. He definitely does not like his cage but there is no way I am letting him near my girls again.
