Arizona Chickens

Announcing, the return of the BYC Arizona thread seed box!

I started this along with BYC member, constance about two years ago. We put in all of our extra seed packets, packets that were expired and seeds collected from plants that we grew. It started with a few hundred packets of seeds. The idea was to promote gardening in AZ and to share seeds from plants we found to do well in our climate and to promote interactions among our community. The only requirement in getting the seed box is that you have to help get it to the next person. You can take what you want/need and add whatever you can, no one will know. It zig-zagged across the state and finally made it back home to me. I was disappointed that there weren't any seeds in it beyond what I sent, but I was thrilled that so many people out there planted seeds from plants that I grew. It was great hearing from some of you. It was also fun to follow it's journey from member to member. I think it was a success and I think we should give it another go. Start collecting your seeds! This time I hope everyone that gets the box signs it with their BYC username. Squeekyballs drew the rooster and the box art was done by azpenguin. Laree even signed the BYC sticker.

I would also be interested. I just ordered a bunch of seeds and will have a lot of extras.

Jealous, Jealous and even more Jealous. What a beautiful set-up you have. Your pictures are amazing and I can imagine it is even more so in person! I just LOVE seeing a field of green! You probably saw my measly patch of lettuce that my hoodlums are constantly flying over the fence to dessicate. I inspire to be you. You may remember that I came onto this thread and was the one whose garden was destroyed by the sewer workers. It's been probably 6 years since my spirit broke and I couldn't plant. I am happy to say I've harvested plenty of lettuce and beets so far this winter and I managed to save 5 of 22 tomato plants from in that nasty freeze we had last month. I am on my way back!

You have obviously spent many hours creating this little heaven on earth. It is well worth all your efforts. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! As a gardener, I don't think I could ever forget your story.

It must have been devastating. I saw your lettuce plants and I thought they looked pretty darn good! And I'm sure the spaghetti squash were great too. Are you eating the beet tops? I grew up my whole life eating beets and it was just a few years ago that I learned that the tops were edible. Really strange given the crazy stuff my family ate growing up. Anyway, they are the best "greens" I've ever had. We really need to get you some Punta Banda and Nichols tomato seeds. The PBs are from Baja and the Nichols are a very old Tucson Heirloom. Both do exceedingly well in our climate and tolerate the cold surprisingly well.

Excellent! I'll put you on the list. I haven't been collecting seeds like I usually do, but I do have some ornamentals from the yard that I collected and I also have the remnants of last years chiltepines that could be used as seed and I still have a ton of my special celery seed that I selected for our climate (truth is, it's our favorite thing we grow).

While I was sick my girls Destroyed one bed and took care of my lettuce in another. I have Kentucky string been seeds o have to collect, I am letting a couple of my zuccine squash go to seeds. My tomato's have self planted and I have tons of yellow chary tomato's, I hope to get seeds from them. Don't know how but that never stopped me. And I hope to get a few more seeds. I can mail them to you next month what I have at this point. I also have a few extra seed packets. They are yours. Oh I have red okra also.

Hang onto your seed LKD! We'll put you on the list for the seed box and you can add your seeds when it gets there. The yellow cherry tomatoes sound great. Here's how I collect tomato seeds. You can do that with zucchini squash too.

I would also be interested. I just ordered a bunch of seeds and will have a lot of extras.

Great! Many of the seeds in the box came from places like Native Seed Search, Southern Seed Exposure and Seeds of Change so there are a lot of heirloom varieties. I'll put you on the list too!

I have one other long bed that I can probably rig up something as well. All my beds are growing something, but slowly, and now it's hell to keep the chickens out. Covering would help with both issues.

How long is your long bed? I have some extra re-mesh I could give you, already bent into hoops.

Thanks.  Sometimes my wife hates that I'm so long winded and tend to over-explain things, so sometimes I wonder if people just skip over my long posts.  In today's world of short FaceBook posts, text messages and whatever this Twitter thing is, people are way to anxious just to skip to the end and expect to understand.

Thanks for the hugs.  The flu is going through our house and now my parents'.  First me currently at the end of recovering, then our baby a day in to it and my wife is well on her way to join the fun.  It's a really nasty one this year, too.  From starting to feel it to horribly sick is about less than 24-hours, the about 12-hours of downright horrible and finally the recovery.  For both of us, it's resulted in very high fevers.  Mom found a product called Sambucus Elderberry Syrup from Nature's Answer.  They have a children's version also.  It has astragulus, echinacea, and elderberry.  All three of which help strengthen the immune system.  I didn't find out about it for me, but we've been giving it to our Baby Girl and it seems to be helping make the symptoms a bit more mild.  It's not the best tasting, but it works.  Since we had to give her a fever reducer, too, we just mixed the two.

Friday was a "fun" day at work.  One of our brilliant guys decided the fire sprinkler supply line was a great place to do pull-ups, and ended up rupturing the line.  He flooded out a good portion of four floors of the building, plus killed all sorts of electronics the entire way.  The early estimates, which are always low, sits at over $4 Million!  Who does these things?  I mean, seriously?  If we are half-way operational by the new year, we'll be lucky.

Crazy man, crazy.. The pipe was old or the guy was big? Did he get fired?

I personally like the way you over-explain things, LOL, it is much preferable to under explaining things. Sometimes though, you use words like "glochids" and "scoby" and nobody else really has any clue what you're talking about it, hahaha

Regarding that 4 million dollar flood, I am just curious about 2 things. Does the taxpayer end up footing the bill, or is there a private insurance carrier for things like that? Also, is the jack-hole that did the the damage, still employed there? Or will he be taken out behind the building and dispatched?

So weird, as I am asking the same questions the news said he was put on administrated leave.. They also said he was a rookie.. Plus, that everything was
back to normal.. Oh but the inmates were moved to tent city.. Back to normal? That fast..? Demo hope is goes smooth for you while you are at work..

Awesome idea.. One of my dearest friends & neighbors have purchased over 300 seed packets last year.. I am willing to share if the box comes this way.. Does it stay down that way? I just went threw 2009 flower seeds.. I planted them in the pots that we have designated for seasonal color.. & of course the pots are In the back where our flock gets to free range.. I will have cover them before I let the little stinkers loose.. We had 20+ friends & neighbors over for a gourmet prim rib dinner this weekend. So they have been in their run for about 4 days.. Our dogs will eat their poo, but we did not want to take a chance of someone stepping in poo & tracking in the house..now with all that said hoping for a good germination :yiipchick

Gallo that looks so great! I'm glad I got to see it before because the after pictures are even more impressive!

I also had my garden destroyed, but by painters. We had to have our house painted and when I interviewed painters the first question I asked was about how they would cover the garden. I went with the painter that took my question seriously even though he charged more. Of course, the guy that came out to talk to me wasn't there when they painted the garden side of the house and when I got home I found paint splatters on Everything in my garden! I had to completely remove all plants and scrape the top layer of soil out. We lost a whole season of beautiful lettuce and greens. The painter reduced his bill quite a bit, but I'd still rather have my garden.
This year's garden was a bust. I don't know what's wrong but I think something(birds?) is eating everything but the garlic and some kale as soon as it sprouts. :(
