Arizona Chickens

Oh, wow.. I will text you this supplement that will help tremendously. Our friend had 5, YES, 5 surgeries on his arm.. He had to have X-rays every month & the doctor could not believe the way he recovered this time, I know everyone will have their advice.. I am sure you will do the research on it as well.. Praying for
a speedy recovery for both flower & D.W.

Lady, yeah hope all is well with Flower.. Hope I will see updates in the next few posts..

I would be interested City Farm if you can PM me the supplement. My husband's knees are mush and no insurance. So far Obama has not been my friend.

Flower came in last night, it is so nice having her here. I Flower enjoys a glass of wine ever so often, so I thought it would be nice to pick up a bottle of table wine. I know nothing about wine. I as I searched the shelves at the grocery store I became more confused by my lake of knowledge.......

Erika! I found it!
How could I go wrong......... They even have Free Range Red. It was actually pretty good. Not very complex but a really nice table wine. We found it at Sprouts on sale, in whites, reds and pink wine................

I am a wine snob, fiend, aficionado, gulper. I have to say I love the Rex Goliath wines and this was long before I was a chicken owner!!

Demosthine, you my be interested in miniature cattle, from everything I have read they are efferent grazers, easier on the land, and even more friendly. This video is really quite good at pointing out these things.

This is very interesting, food for thought.

That was a very cute video! I've contemplated one here for a few months, but I haven't checked my zoning or anything yet. My wife had agrees to let me get a few goats if she got her dog. The dog has come and gone already, so I guess if I wanted, I'm should be good to go. I hear they can be so destructive, though, a Dexter would be better.

My biggest concern with a mini cow is keeping her in milk. I haven't read up on that yet, but I may have to start. We spend about $800 a year on our raw milk, so this would actually save money if the cost is accurate in that video.

There's always a better way... And at 1 to 2 gallons milk a day, I could even sell the excess. Start making my own cheeses. Yeah, always a better way...

If you don't have room to keep two so you are always in milk, then perhaps you could find another family with one, arrange to breed your animals at different times and share the milk; like when yours is dry you get milk from the other and when their is dry they get milk from you.

Better yet is 3 goats, besides they are cuter ;-)

Also, does anyone have any input regarding mixed breeds? My (unintended) roosters are RIR and Barred Rock... the hens in my flock are not matching breeds... I'm learning as I go, and don't have the heart at this point to send Rhodie and Barnaby the roosters to Camp Freezer. Soooo, thought since they are so "friendly" with the girls, I might as well take a stab at a self-sustaining flock rather than relying on buying pullets. I have far more demand for eggs than I can satisfy, so growing the flock is a viable option.
I love my mixed flock! My adults aren't mixed, but my babies are. I hatched some shipped eggs just for more variety in the egg basket (CCL, blue/black Marans), but from here on out I am self-sustaining if I want to be. I have a RIR roo x BR eggs, and will be hatching more Rhodebars for the Easter hatch a long so I have an autosexing coop, but will continue to hatch mixes for my layers.

I have 18 4-week-olds right now. My 2 RIR x EE pullets are gorgeous, so is my Rhodebar cockerel. I also have RIR over BO and production red. I have really enjoyed hatching them and watching them grow, and especially knowing where they come from!

It sounds like you could make some really interesting mixes!

Hi,

I'm Liz.  I live in Tucson. My fiance and I have 11 hens and a pheasant we rescued just yesterday from the road.  He's been hit by a car, but he seems to be better today.  Trying to find his real owner.

If you live in Tucson and you're missing your pretty pheasant, reply to me!

Much Love!

Liz

So glad to have you goin in!!
:welcome
What breed of chickens do you have?

In the PM I sent they had a miniature Jersey, one on the breeders also sell sperm. Artificial insemination is recommended because of the size. They are breed down from the larger cows. It takes 4 generation to breed true. If you want meat also the Dexter, if for milk the Jersey. In the works in the Guernsey and the Brown Swiss two of my favorite.

Some scary happenings last night. It was about midnight and I was still up, browsing BYC when I heard coyotes. First time since having chickens. We usually hear them in the wash that backs up to houses that are across the street from us. This time it was coming from closer to my backyard and seemed to be about 1/2 block away. I think there were maybe 2 but they were calling for reinforcements pretty loudly. I ran out to the backyard and made some obvious human sounds yelling and banging. They quit howling and moved along. I woke hubby and we fired a single 20 gauge shot in case they were still in hearing range.

Now I am terrified they smelled my coop and know there is something to be had in my yard. I wonder if they will keep coming back every night until they figure out a way to get in. They will need to scale a 6 ft wall which I know they are perfectly capable of. My girls are locked in the roost portion of the coop after dark, so they would need to somehow dig their way into the coop/run and figure out how to chew through the wood to get to them. Hubby seems to think there is no way they can get into the roost portion even if they were somehow able to access the run. I'm just not so sure anymore.

I have a pack of coyotes go within 100 yards of my house just after sunset almost on a nightly basis. I have also on numerous occasions seen them walking through my front yard. I would assume they have "smelled" my birds. I also have a standard 6' block wall keeping them out of the yard. I haven't seen any track near the wall or anywhere else showing interest. I just trust that I built the coop secure enough should they want to hop the wall. The rabbits and ground squirrels are so plentiful here I just don't think they want to put forth the effort.
