Arizona Chickens

How are everyone's chickens doing with the sudden heat?  Mine were gaping and panting this afternoon.  I dread hooking up the misters this early, I need to put out the pot saucers for them to wade in.
:yiipchick

My cortunix quail chicks seem to handle the heat better than the chickens.  They are several generations desert bred so must be better than hatchery chickens from cold country at dealing with heat.

Yeah, they were panting.. I just put a thermometer in the run.. We also let the water run a bit to long. That did seem to make it a bit cooler..

So we've had quite the adventure today. I came home yesterday and Our very sweet Boss Hogg had lost her voice. I couldn't find anything helpful on the forums about it. Seems it's happened to a few people but since she wasn't symptomatic in any other way, it was a mystery. I think I went into hyper-chondria this morning because I swore she was walking funny and I got really worried. My friend, who is a nearby vet and also has chickens, said to bring her in and she'd watch her until she could get in with Dr. Funk. She let Boss Hogg hang out in the treatment area and she was very popular there this morning (pecked a cat though). Btw, Dr. Funk is at Mesa VCA and works with a lot of chickens if anyone ever needs a vet. It's on Country Club and 8th.

Turns out it's chicken laryngitis probably due to a mild bacterial infection, so she's on antibiotics for the next 5-6 days. He said she's otherwise very healthy, no parasites or anything like that. But she had quite the day, I think she enjoyed her day out.

Oh boy, girl this is awesome.. So love the photos!!! Thank you for posting.. What a stinker..

Oh, how stinkin' cute is THAT! Thanks for the photos! :) Hope she starts feeling better soon. I'm sure she enjoyed all the TLC!!!

I'm actually starting to wonder if she's a genius. It gets up to 99 degrees and all of the sudden she pulls laryngitis out of the hat and ends up spending the day in AC and getting fed and held by everyone. My corgi pretends his leg is hurt sometimes if he wants more attention. I can tell because he'll forget which leg. Lol. She doesn't like the medicine but seems to feel ok and was back to scratching an dirt baths this evening. :)

You & your animals are funny... Love your pet adventures..

One of my pullets didn't go in to roost with everyone tonight else and instead was out in the run. When I finally saw her walking away from where she was I found this shell-less egg! I'm pretty sure it was her egg since I had just been in the run cleaning before they rest of the girls went in to roost and the egg wasn't there. It's her first egg, and she must not have known what was happening or what to do about it the way she was just hanging out in the run. I'm hoping the rest of her eggs come out normal! This one looks like a water balloon.
Congrats.. That is eggciting..:yesss:

Amazing!!! I do have a questions for all chicken holders.... aren't you afraid of your chickens poop on you? I know that birds usually don't hold their poos...

Thanks City farm! They are characters. We're up to 4 dogs now and 4 chickens (we live in an HOA so we can have chickens but in "pet numbers"). They keep it interesting though.

Yeah, my friend Eva (the vet who was letting her hang out with them in the morning) said she didn't seem very sick but everyone liked having her there. I think I must have "Grade A Sucker" stamped on my forehead...

They do and can. Especially when they are babies they'll often poop on you as soon as you pick them up. They are sort of pooping all the time. When they are adults they seem to have a little bit of decorum and I think they try not to poop on you, but if they have to go, they have to go. Usually the poop is fairly dry/solid and you can just pick it up or brush it off (doesn't tend to stick to you). But if gotten pooped on a number of times. Just make sure you wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
