Arizona Chickens

Great. The chicks have done such a good job turning over the crusty, compact Phoenix dirt that I was super excited about throwing grass seed. It's so dusty here that I want grass to keep the tracking in of dirt down. I thought for sure that I would only have to coop them for a week to let it germinate. 1 month, they're gonna drive me crazy

I had to completely fence my chickens out of my grass. They destroyed it.

A little chicken and K9Dave thank you for your kind words. I recently bought 15 chicks and crossing my fingers for better luck with this batch.

K9Dave I've lived here most of my life and it is truly a wonderful place to live. My father has worked as a machinist for TEP for over 25 years, you may have crossed paths with him. Small world.

Do you have kids? How is the school system? I've heard it is pretty good.

My parents' house is kinda near the sawmill...I think off of School Bus Rd? I passed the sawmill when I went on a walk last time I was there, so it's walking distance.

I have two boys, 15 and 7. I do like the school system the teachers here are great. My only complaint is the four day school week. Its nice having them home for a three day weekend each week but I wish they had that extra day. Somehow they are able to get in everything they need to teach in the four day week though.

Sounds like your parents are close to me. My cross roads are 10th and Rencher(between Burk and Crosby). Do they have chickens?

No, my parents don't have chickens. They aren't up there full-time yet, don't know when or if they'll move permanently. My dad is pretty impressed with my chickens, so it might be easy to convince him to get some of his own.

4-day school week---might be becoming more common--my friends' kids in Buckeye are also on a 4-day school week. Not sure how that works out well with 5-day work weeks for the adults!

I'm behind on the weekend posts, will probably catch up throughout the day...

So...I bought pvc for the feeder I'm building.  I thought pvc was supposed to be inexpensive and NO, IT'S NOT.  holy carp.  I guess it's cheap if one is using leftover parts from a new build.  Again, I should have expected this, as it is in keeping with the most expensive chickens in Tucson.  For whatever reason, I dragged my husband along and he convinced me that the cheaper drainage pvc wouldn't work, so I bought the schedule 40 stuff, and the pieces were expensive in the 3 and 4" size.  Ridic.  I managed to substitute cheaper pieces here and there, but overall, spent too much money.  But, it means I can leave the meat chickens for a few days and not worry about them...and the bulky hanging feeder can be removed and give them some more room.  The hanging feeder in there now--was built for only $5--I can do some things right!

Got all the pieces together for the water cups.  I'll put it together sometime this week.

I'm going out of town for a few days in 2 weeks--there's a rush to get all of this stuff together.  Working on my garden irrigation too, which is stressing me out. I have the line extending too far (I need 2-3 separate zones, but only have one to work with for now).  I think it will be enough to keep the garden alive for a few days without me overseeing it, but won't work for later in the summer when I'll be gone for a couple of weeks.

Sounds like fun not stressful.. Enjoy it while you can.. Sounds like you have a great plan.. Enjoy your trip..

My flock was kept off mine for about six weeks while it germinated. When I let them loose, they cleared the sprouts clean. I was amazed at how thoroughly it was eliminated!

Hello, all :frow. I haven't been around for a year or so, so I thought I would reintroduce myself. I just completed a move to a new house on the NW side of Tucson (River & LaCholla-ish) and I am starting a new little flock within the next few days, so I will probably be hanging around the forum more often.

I know I will never get caught up on all I missed, but I've gone back a little bit. I recognize some of the names, and its really great to see how many people have stuck around for so long. Anyway, just wanted to say Hi. :)

Yeah wondered what happen to ya.. so glad you are back... Keep us posted on what breeds... :goodpost:

Please help !  If anyone remember who was on their way to Tucson for a visit and to pick up the SEED EXCHANGE BOX  please post or PM me.  I've gone back seven pages and can not find the post.  (humm maybe I am too late ?)

I'm not sure who was going to Tucson but I think Littlechiken said she was coming up to PHX soon. Maybe she is willing to get it from Gallo.

How do we get on the list?
