Arizona Chickens

We're in the Gila Valley, near Safford.  I believe it "can" get too hot.  We have ours so they have plenty of shade, and when it's extremely hot this summer; we'll turn the fan on in the hen house.  And of course water, water and more water always available.   Hope this helps!

Agh, hope I did not miss saying, :welcome. So glad you are on.. Have you ever hiked arivipa?? One of my favorites!!!

My "source" at channel 9 says they will be at the city council meeting on Tuesday. I guess the urban farming community DOES have a voice.
They are trying to say on the Tucson CLUCKS on FB is.......
Just heard something on NPR about a city council meeting on Tuesday regarding Urban Ag. Should we all plan to come to this meeting and perhaps speak?

Bernadette, please read below. It's NOT city council, it's a public info meeting to discuss proposed urban ag zoning changes. Several steps to go before it reaches council. There's a pre-meeting Saturday near Fourth Avenue. Again, details below or perhaps someone can repost. Thanks.

YES! This is the meeting I have been referring to for several months now! It is not a public hearing -- it is more of an informational meeting and a facilitated conversation so the city staff can gather information about community support for local small scale food production. There are many folks opposed for a variety of reasons and they will be out in force on Tuesday -- so come out and participate! Let the city know how you feel!

I just wanted to share since we are all wanting the same results.
Good job keep us posted.. You might have already,, I am so far behind in post's it is interesting how "they" are slowly trying to take away basic important things.. They label it as a " local input" community meeting, however they don't tell everyone.. I can go on but you get the jist..

City council in my opion can be tricky.. Sometimes their language & the meaning is not the same as others... Have neighbors add their opion in wrighting,
Ask them to add it to the minutes before the meeting.. This is a city council meeting right?? Shoot I am so tired from family in town...
They are calling it an informational gathering that city council will not yet meet about it.....they want to know what the community thinks first. That is why it is so important we go. they are having a meeting on Sunday but it being mothers day i wonder how many will go.

They made me an admin on Tucson Clucks and it is the site that was posted in the article. I have been suggesting BYC because a lot of people have questions and this site has so many answers from experienced people. I am no expert but I do try to keep informed. I guess I need to read more forums here on BYC myself although I feel many of the hours of my day are spent lurking through all the forums....who knew there could be so much to learn about chickens? I mean we only throw food and water to them and eggs magically appear right? ok just kidding but seriously I have raised chickens off and on my whole life and I feel very uneducated compared to most of you. I think if I feel this way I can only imagine how a person feels that was raised in the city. Urban farming is a fad (we can only hope it lasts). I will continue to bring you whatever info I get or any questions I am asked. I know that they are asking for families with kids to do a interview with KVOA about the salmonella outbreak from the hatchery. They have this article posted all over FB http://www1.kvoa.com/news/cdc-mail-order-chicks-infect-63-people/
I think the timing of this article release is interesting in light of the upcoming meetings for urban farming in Tucson.

This is the meeting info for Sunday For Tucson

Zen Hens is hosting an event!
Merrill Eisenburg has agreed to give us a presentation on the new Sustainable Land use Code she has been helping author for the city of Tucson. She will review the effort underway to revise the City’s zoning regulations on urban agriculture, including farmers’ markets, community gardens, urban farms, and the keeping of small animals. This meeting is educational but will also be a platform to come up with strategies to make these new policies more acceptable to neighborhood associations.
This will be at the Food Conspiracy Co-op Hoff building at 725 E. Seventh St. (directly behind the Co-op) at 1:30 on Saturday May 10th. Feel free to bring your friends or invite others who may be interesting in attending. Refreshments will be provided. Hope to meet you there!

here is what Tucson Clucks is all about in case anyone is interested. (its a closed group)

ABOUT
Closed GroupClosed Group The Tucson City Living Urban Chicken Keeping Society (Tucson CLUCKS)

A group for allies of urban agriculture in Tucson and Pima County, Arizona. Allies include supporters as well as current keepers of food producing animals.

This group was designed to mobilize supporters of urban animal husbandry in preparation for upcoming public hearings held by the Tucson City Council to examine proposed changes to current animal policies and land use codes.

Proposed changes include eliminating current property line setbacks for animal structures (currently set at 50 ft from property line) and reclassification of animal policy based on animal units in relation to square footage of residential lots.

Currently proposed changes would specify that an R-1 (7,000-10,000 sq ft) lot would be allowed to house 2.5 animal units. 2.5 animal units would be defined as: 25 chickens (hens) OR 4 miniature goats and five chickens OR 2 miniature goals and 10 chickens and 2 ducks and 1 rabbit OR 4 turkeys and 2 miniature goats and 3 chickens, etc. Animal units would be calculated based on the following scale: chickens (hens) = .1; rabbits = .1; rodents = .1; ducks = .2; turkeys/geese = .4; miniature goats = .5;

Public hearings are expected sometime in fall of 2012. Opponents will surely voice opposition to these changes so it is essential that we organize a significant body of current animal keepers AND happy neighbors AND general supporters to speak on behalf of the rights of Tucson residents to keep food producing animals on their private residential lots.
