Arizona Chickens

Our chickens live in an enclosed stable, but the top 1/2 only has chickenwire, to keep out the other birds.

We do have an area surrounded by 4ft fence, for the birds, but they fly out of it. We will be putting a roof over it and putting chicken wire around the top half.

We have too many hawks, owls, etc. that fly over scoping out our birds.

Hey all, looks like it has been a while since the zonies have sounded off.
We just had a coyote attack.

I want to kill the yote, but I am not sure how to do it legally.
Any experience killing yotes on your land? I only have an acre and homes all around.
I know I can't "hunt" with a firearm within 1/4 mile of a dwelling, but, I also know that I have the right to defend my property and livestock.
Can I trap him? shoot him? poison him?
What is the advisable method?

If I don't get him, he will get more of my chickens and having him coming in attracts him to other possible prey, like the neighbors little dogs.

I'm sorry to hear about the coyote attack. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice about the coyotes.

Luckily, we have a 6ft chainlink fence around our property, so they can't get in.

I hope someone else has some advice for you.

FYI, we thought our 6 foot fence would keep them out, too. It doesn't! The coyote came at 1:30 in the afternoon in broad daylight, jumped our 6 foot fence in complete silence and killed two chickens before we discovered him.

Thanks for the warning about the fence. I will definitely keep an eye out.

Our chickens are in an enclosed stable, so hopefully that will help keep them safe.

There are just too many predators to let them free-range.

I talked to the Maricopa County Sheriff personally in October and we CAN shoot or kill them by another means on our property. They wiped out my entire flock in early October after our best dog in the whole wide world died. I just need to ask the Sheriff if javelina fall into the same catagory. We have a pack of at leat 5 that visit us every night. They come right up on the porch and look for dog food scraps!

My husband and a few other guys go to target practice every week. The fellows at the gun range say I don't have to practice anymore until my husband can shoot better then I do!!

My husband says I shoot better than he does too! That is so funny because I won't go out shooting with him anymore. His friends stink (really, they smell bad on the weekends).

Do you really get eggs all summer? I am wondering about that. This coming will be our first summer with our girls. They are laying up a storm right now while everyone else is just trying to keep their chickens from freezing to death.
I even have one going broody right now which is sooooo exciting because I am about to order some Marans eggs to hatch!!!

Hi everyone, I'm new on this forum but have been breeding, raising and showing chickens for a couple years now give or take. It's nice to see a thread of other Arizona people. I'm in Mesa. I don't focus on laying hens, just my show ones, but they are just as equally pets to me. They run up to you, can hold them, perch on your arm, walk around the house, etc.

I have Crele Old English Game Bantams and Golden Duckwing and BBRed American Game Bantams. I love the look of game breeds. So proud, strong, small, and I find they are very very smart.

If anyone has had these breeds (I see someone has a Modern Game in their avatar) knows that they must be dubbed for show as per the APA and ABA standard. Most of you probably know about the roosters they euthanized the other day. They stated if they were dubbed, they were fighting, which is totally untrue, but I'm afraid at some point when they come see my flock they will see my gorgeous cocks that are dubbed and take them. For something I've worked so hard at for years to be taken away on a dumb assuption would be devestating to me.


But anyway, I've never had a concern before now.

Looking forward to getting to know some people on here! Anyone have updated pictures of their flock?

I see people were talking about the heat last year back in the thread. I hope everyone has their plans out for this year's summer.

I use black shade cloth (probably 80%) over my cages as well as spray the ground down well and angle the tractors so they will have shade depending where the sun is during the day.
