Arizona Chickens

X 2!  I was going to respond similarly to this post, but you beat me to it!   The modern coyote couldnt care less about where you pee'd & what your intentions were whilst doing so. You have poultry in a convenient, captive environment & he is hungry & will exploit that fact. They are HIGHLY intelligent and will most certainly keep returning to your place, even infrequently, until there are no more birds or until you "predator proof" your coop. Or you cut his life short. Those are cold facts, not my opinion.
I am willing to relocate them while they are still in the live trap, to a filled water trough.
The urine and carcass method work. I've used it and know others that do too so saying it doesn't work is false. Maybe it did to work for you but it does in fact work.

I dont doubt you on the carcass hanging thing for RURAL coyotes. But city-fied URBAN coyotes are what were being discussed here. And you cant exactly go hanging decomposing animal carcasses inside city limits and especially not in an HOA.

Thank you everyone for the advise, my husband is currently standing watch and waiting. I think he has made it his personal mission to regain our yard. I wish I could post a picture of him, he looks quite funny. I will keep you updated as the battle plays on, I have a feeling this will be a long one...
What a great mental image of him waiting!

Wow, it looks like I'm not the only one with losses this week.

I'm getting over it, and planning with my husband as to what we are going to do. I really would like to get an electric fence put up eventually but we need to save for that. In the meantime, when he gets back from El Paso I think we will be putting up some plywood or something similar around the bottom perimeter of the coop where there is exposed wire.
Blocking the line of sight is good but it will also make it harder for the coyotes to go through the wire if they have to tip toe...or levitate.

Ah poor Cricket.

. We have some rabbit cages. I was told those are good for quail. We really want to build an Avery in our front yard so we can sit and watch them when we eat outside etc. You have been having roadrunner issues haven't you? what about putting shiny streamers around your quail? I know it scares hawks it might scare roadrunners.
Yes we have roadrunner issues. It's no problem for people with just chickens, but quail are so small and defenseless they make a snack even for roadrunners. I do have the streamers around my herbs and veggie beds to keep birds away and it does work for the most part. Not sure how it would work for roadrunners, they are pretty smart for birds. I'll have to put some up and see how it works.

I will be getting my mini heifer next week. I plan to have both fresh goats and fresh cows milk so I will let you know and you can come taste it. most people do not realize that all goats and all cows of different breeds have different flavored milk. It has to do with fat and butterfat content also the cream each breed makes. I love Nubian goat milk because they have very high cream and butterfat so it is sweet.
It also matter's what they eat. If they eat things that taste bad it flavors the milk. This is why most people feed a sweet feed of some sort because the flavor it gives the milk and the protein it gives the doe that is producing the milk.
I cannot legally sell milk unless it is sold for "animal consumption" only per AZ state laws.
The taste of goat milk can even change from goat to goat. My sister's oldest Nigerian has better tasting milk than the younger ones.

My eye opener when I first moved to Diamond Bell was a cat sleeping under a cactus at my rear property line. I slowly snuck up on it, planning to scare the h*** out of it. When I made my final rush, the surprise was on me. It was only half of a cat.

Thank you. I put ice bottles out today. Hopefully that will help. I noticed they stopped laying the last two days. Is that because of the heat?
It sure can be. It can be very hard on chickens.

Oh no, condolences from us.. :hit

Yes, the heat is when they take a break from laying.. Our girls love frozen grapes.. When it is over 115' we get ice blocks.. Spoiled brats..

Have things changed with the laws at all recently? This is the farm that I am talking about.

Unless they are going to put for animal consumption only on all of their products that get distributed?

My friend had Nubian goats for a while before she moved into a gated community, but we never got the chance to try her milk. I'm guessing we would probably like something with a higher fat/butterfat content as we still drink whole milk here. My mom tells me stories about how they used to sneak the cream off the top of the milk jugs when she and her siblings were younger.....but now she can't drink anything but skim milk. Yuck.

as long as they are a certified dairy they can sell all the milk they want. AZ is a grade A dairy state and unfortunately that means back yard milkers cannot sell raw or pasteurized milk without having a certified dairy. we can however sell milk for animal consumption only.

We have animals here at our house, we will buy some.. Wish you were my neighbor.. I could help love on them farm animals!! :weee

:goodpost:

Good idea for a quick fix..,anything to help you feel better while your away..
I wish I had a electric fence around our home, windows, door that would shock people that come to solicit.. For some reason they can not read.. :idunno

I was taking pictures of Jenny yesterday, because she is 9 weeks old now, and getting BIG!

While snapping pics of Jenny, I got photo-bombed by Lorenzo!

He does love attention!

I'll listen......IF they get past the dog! (It's about 25 feet from my front gate to my front porch. Getting there is only half the fun. Depending on my mood, and depending on the dog's mood, you still have to make it back to the gate).
